Reviews Summary
Visitors find the St. Leopold Mandić Church to be a beautiful and peaceful Catholic shrine in Herceg Novi's old town. Its modest architecture and serene atmosphere are appreciated, offering a quiet space for prayer and reflection. Many note its significance as a place devoted to St. Leopold, the saint of reconciliation and healing.
"One of the most beautiful catholic shrines in Herceg Novi, the church of St. Leopold Mandić is set in the center of the old town and architecturaly is a part of an old capuchins complex that contained a hospice, sanctuary and parish office.
Built in 1688., owing to Girolamo Corner it administratively belonged to the Capuchin Province of Venice. In it's appearance, size and spatial organization it follows an old Capuchin tradition of building simple and small, one nave, single wing, modest churches on a rectangular ground plan. The arches are flanking from the main altar and connect the sanctuary with a small sacristy. Southern side of the church is dedicated to the Holy Mary, Mother of God with a small altar that is tastefully and beautifully arranged with many different of flowers depending on the time of the year.
Behind the main altar, there is a picture that briefly summarizes the life of St. Leopold to whom the church is dedicated and which was born in Herceg Novi on the 12th of May 1866. He studied philosophy and theology in the friaries of Padua (Santa Croce) and Venice (Santissimo Redentore). On the 20th of September 1890. he was ordained as a priest in the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice. He stayed in Padua for the rest of his life and despite his shy and modest personality, he became popular as a confessor and a spiritual guide devoted to his service to the people and ecumenism.
He was designated as saint-confessors to inspire people to become reconciled with God and the Church by the confession of their sins.
Famous for being a saint of reconciliation, healing and ecumenism, St. Leopold is also a patron saint for all those that are suffering from tumors. Therefore this shrine is often visited by all those who are looking for moments of peace, prayer, spiritual and physical healing."
