What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Cenote Suytun's breathtaking beauty, particularly the iconic sunbeam illuminating the central platform, creating a truly magical and photogenic experience. While the natural wonder is highly praised, some find the cenote can get very crowded, impacting the serene atmosphere and photo opportunities.
"Very good experience
Important to take with you... Towels, NOT SUN'S CREAM (not permitted if you're going into the water), snacks, water. There are some lockers to use (50pesos) or you can take with you. Has 2 places for you to change (male and female), enjoy 2 amazing Cenotes.
Taxi from the city to Suytun coast about 150pesos.
Or you can go by tour (less time to stay).
Great for pictures and fun."

"We arrived before 9 and got the place almost to ourselves. They even let us in 20 minutes before the official entry. You can buy the tickets online to get a small discount as well. You just have to book / buy them in advance as the online tickets cannot be redeemed the same day. After our bought them online they are valid for a year.
Also you will not need a locker as the place has enough space to put down your stuff before swim."

"i feel it was a bit overhyped (as most large tourist attractions are), but it was still beautiful. having gone to the nearby cenotes xkeken and samula (which were much more peaceful, cheaper, and one ticket gets you into both), i feel like i probably could have skipped suytun, because they are visually similar. i didn't like the vibe of most people being there just for the photo op on the platform."

The Magic of the Sunbeam
To capture this perfect shot, timing is crucial. Many travelers recommend using apps like Photo Ephemeris to predict the sun's position and angle for the day of your visit. While midday offers the most direct beam, it also brings the largest crowds. For a more serene experience and still beautiful light, consider visiting shortly after opening or in the late afternoon.
Remember that the cenote's delicate ecosystem is a priority. Visitors are required to shower before entering to remove any lotions or sunscreens that could pollute the water. This commitment to preservation ensures that future visitors can also marvel at the cenote's natural beauty.
Planning Your Visit: Timing and Crowds
Another strategy is to visit in the late afternoon, after 3:00 PM. While the sunbeam might not be as intense as at midday, you can still catch beautiful light, and the crowds tend to thin out. Some visitors have noted that around noon offers a direct sunbeam, but be prepared for a high crowd density.
If you're part of a tour, be aware that group schedules might dictate your visit time. Some tours, like those from Cancun or Playa del Carmen, are designed to hit popular spots efficiently, so communicate your desire for fewer crowds if possible.
Beyond the Photos: Experiencing the Cenote
The cenote itself is a geological wonder, featuring impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over centuries. Take your time to admire these natural sculptures and the unique atmosphere of the underground chamber. It's a chance to connect with nature in a truly unique setting.
Remember the importance of environmental respect. Before entering the water, you'll need to shower to ensure the cenote's water remains pristine. This simple act helps preserve this natural treasure for generations to come.
