What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Playa Maya is praised for its beautiful white sands and clear turquoise waters, offering a more tranquil experience than some of Tulum's busier beaches. Visitors appreciate the potential for snorkeling and the convenience of nearby beach clubs. However, recent changes mean it's no longer entirely free, with entrance fees now required as part of the national park, and parking can be a point of confusion.
"Several locals recommended Playa Maya, and it did not disappoint — clean sand, seaweed picked up daily, and great options for snorkeling or boat rides to see the lighthouse. Playa Paraíso Beach Club is also right at this entrance — perfect for relaxing afterward with good food, drinks, and a beautiful swimming area."
Erik Juarez
"This is a public beach but it is no longer free. Since it is inside the national park you now have to pay at the south or north entrances to enter the park. There you get a bracelet. They have built a fancy entrance monument to this beach and a guy is there to make sure you have a bracelet. It looks like the days of parking along the road and walking into the beach for free are over."
Mark Pabst
"Absolutely beautiful beach and since it’s the first beach from the west entrance it’s usually empty as many travel to the more well known beaches down the road. So if you want a beautiful view and no crowds this is the best beach!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
Understanding Playa Maya's Public Access
It's important to note that the 'public' designation refers to the beach being accessible to everyone, rather than being entirely without cost. The construction of a 'fancy entrance monument' and the requirement of a bracelet suggest a more managed and potentially revenue-generating approach to beach access. This shift means visitors should budget for an entry fee and be aware of potential payment methods, such as dedicated apps.
Despite the access fees, Playa Maya remains a beautiful destination. Its location as the first beach from the west entrance often means it's less crowded than other popular spots further down the coast. This makes it an attractive option for those seeking a more tranquil beach experience, provided they are prepared for the entry requirements.
Navigating Parking and Vendors at Playa Maya
Be prepared for assertive vendors who may try to sell expensive packages, including snorkeling tours. A key piece of advice from travelers is to not buy from these vendors immediately. Instead, consider bringing your own food and drinks to save money. If you're interested in tours, it's often better to research and book them independently or through more reputable channels.
The area around Playa Maya has also seen significant construction, with a focus on beach clubs and restaurants rather than small local businesses. This can make navigating the one-way street system a bit complicated. Understanding these dynamics can help you plan your visit more effectively and avoid unnecessary expenses.
