"This museum is located in the house once inhabited by one of San Luis Potosí's most important figures of the 19th century, known for his works as The Singer of Nature. Praised even by the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, he was also known as the "Singer of Nature."
Some manuscripts and objects that belonged to him are kept here. The furniture dates from his lifetime, although it did not belong to the family.
The house has a characteristic well in the central courtyard, around which the office, living room, bedroom, dining room, correspondence room, and reading room are arranged.
Manuel José Othón (San Luis Potosí 1858–1906) began writing poetry at the age of 13, long before beginning his career as a lawyer. At 21, he published his first works under the title Poesías (Poems), and three years later a new volume was published under the title Nuevas Poesías (New Poems). His poems center on a single theme: nature and man's relationship with it. Thus, in 1902, he published Poemas rurales (Rustic Poems) and in 1907, Noche rurales en Walpurgis (Rustic Night in Walpurgis). Othón's best-known work, which also enjoys international acclaim, is Idilio Salvaje (Wild Idyll), published in 1906.
He obtained the position of federal deputy, joined the Congress of the Union in 1900, and was a member of the Mexican Academy of Language.
The museum is run by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the State of San Luis Potosí.
