Reviews Summary

The Cenote Spa at Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is praised for its stunning cenote-inspired design, tranquil atmosphere, and professional, welcoming staff who provide attentive service. Guests enjoy the hydrotherapy circuit, sauna, and well-executed treatments. However, some recent visitors have noted disappointing issues with facility maintenance, inconsistent service, and a lack of transparency regarding amenities, leading to concerns about value for money.

"The Cenote Spa a was a really nice experience. The design is inspired by a cenote, with natural light and water features, and it creates a calm atmosphere as soon as you walk in. The service was very good, the staff were professional, friendly, and explained everything clearly.

I booked a treatment and it was done with care, which made it easy to relax. Afterward, I spent time enjoying the pools and sauna. The whole space was clean, well kept, and not too crowded.

Overall, the Cenote Spa has good service, a beautiful design, and a quiet atmosphere that makes it worth visiting in Playa del Carmen."

"Disappointed 07/25:

We’ve visited this spa multiple times in the past and generally had a very positive experience. However, this time was deeply disappointing due to poor service, reduced amenities, and a lack of transparency upon Hyatt Spa staff.

I’m changing my 5-star review from the last visit to 1 stars due to this experience. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves transparency, service consistency, and facility upkeep.

Here are the major issues we encountered:

• Hot tub was not working in the women’s area. The hot plunge was completely lukewarm. Staff insisted it worked. Another guest using it also complained. They did nothing about it.

Sadly, this was not disclosed to us at check-in. For a spa that advertises Korean hot and cold plunges—known for stimulating blood circulation and metabolism—this is a major failure. You can’t do hot and cold plunges without two extreme temps. For some reason in Mexico, they don’t heat the Jacuzzi or the hot plunge. They need to learn from Onsen spas in Thailand and Japan what this therapy must do.

• Ladies room: Broken locker locks.
Locker no 15 was not working. This pic is another locker without a lock. I had to tell the woman I need another locker so they move me to locker number 10. raising both convenience and security concerns. When you come to a five star hotel, you expect quality not a rundown place.

• No floor maintenance in wet areas:
In the women’s area, no staff were present to mop wet floors, which creates a clear safety hazard of slipping. It appears that staffing has been cut back.

• Shower inside the wet sauna is broken: The shower in the wet sauna did not work, making it difficult to cool off or rinse properly after a sauna session.

• Unjustified and inconsistent restaurant discount policy:
On a previous visit, spa guests received a 30% discount at the upstairs restaurant. This time, I was told that it was a “mistake” and that only members—not guests—receive the discount.

To make matters worse, I was charged approximately $70 USD for just a simple 2 eggs, 1 slice of sour dough, I coffee, 1 orange juice, spaghetti. A spoon of chicken was charged 80 pesos separately. The manager gal came over and began speaking in English ‘firmly’ repeating that I’m not a member and therefore not eligible for the discount & that last time was a mistake.
I don’t appreciate surprise charges or policy shifts that aren’t communicated in advance—Consistency matters.
• Loss of special ambiance and amenities:
• The cenote room no longer features the alternating red and blue light therapy or cascading greens which added a unique therapeutic atmosphere.
• The herbal water station has been no water likely to avoid the need for staff to manage it.
• High cost for poor value:
We were charged 1,900 pesos for two people—approximately $100 USD—which is a premium price. I’m willing to pay that if the services are fully functional and the experience delivers on what’s promised. But when key features are broken, amenities are stripped away, and I’m being misinformed or overcharged, it’s simply not worth it.

The spa may have a unique offering in the area, but relying on that while cutting corners and surprising loyal customers with unexpected changes is not sustainable. Even loyal customers won’t return if they feel taken advantage of.

My son just told me that in the men’s the wet sauna was not working. When he complained they fixed it. The people are not gonna bring up the problems. This place is gonna get rundown because the owners are nicking people to just make money.

08/05/25: Instead of fixing the issues the Hyatt management decided to close off spa use to walk ins making it only for hotel guests. That really tells you something. Sudden shift in policy? Good luck to hotel guests who will be scammed now upon a sight unseen sold to them as part of their $400 a night package."

"This is a beautiful spa with excellent facilities and top-class treatments. The cenote pool is spectacular -a real oasis! The lap pool is cool, refreshing and always brilliantly clean! The steam room and sauna are well maintained and effective, and the cold and hot plunges are a real delight. Overall I rate the amenities as top of the range. However, what really makes this the very best in Spa experiences is the staff, Javier, Fabiola and the whole team of support staff and therapists are so incredibly, genuinely warm and welcoming it transforms the visit to another level. These people have so much heart and authenticity in what they do, they provide an incredible level of attention without intruding on one´s peace and tranquility, respecting the customer´s space and independence. Really a fantastic balance of attentiveness and service! Well done Hyatt - you have a team here like no other!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Cenote Spa Experience: What to Expect

The Cenote Spa at Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen is renowned for its unique design, drawing inspiration from the natural cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula. Visitors often praise the tranquil atmosphere created by natural light, water features, and the overall serene ambiance. The spa aims to provide a holistic wellness experience, blending modern luxury with traditional Mayan healing practices. Instagram+1

Upon arrival, guests can expect professional and friendly staff who guide them through the facilities and treatment options. The spa offers a range of services, from massages to other therapeutic treatments, all performed with a focus on guest relaxation and well-being. Many visitors highlight the quality of service and the attention to detail provided by the therapists. Reddit

Beyond treatments, the spa facilities themselves are a major draw. These often include a hydrotherapy circuit with hot and cold plunges, a steam room, and a sauna. Guests can also enjoy relaxation areas and sometimes lap pools. The ability to use these facilities throughout the day, even before or after a treatment, is a perk many appreciate. InstagramReddit

Navigating Spa Amenities and Potential Issues

While the Cenote Spa generally receives positive reviews for its design and staff, some guests have reported issues with facility maintenance and service consistency. Past experiences have noted non-functional hot tubs or lukewarm plunges, broken locker locks, and wet areas lacking floor maintenance, raising concerns about safety and upkeep. Reddit

There have also been instances where advertised amenities, like specific light therapies or herbal water stations, were either removed or not maintained, leading to disappointment. Inconsistent discount policies and unexpected charges at resort restaurants have also been mentioned, impacting the overall value perception for some visitors. Reddit

It's advisable for potential visitors to inquire about the current operational status of all desired facilities, especially the hot and cold plunges and the sauna/steam rooms, before booking treatments. Understanding the resort's current policies regarding spa access for non-guests and any applicable discounts is also recommended to manage expectations and ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience. Reddit

World of Hyatt Points and Spa Value

For members of the World of Hyatt loyalty program, the Cenote Spa offers an option to redeem points for treatments. A specific example shows a treatment costing 20,000 World of Hyatt points, which can represent significant value depending on your point balance and the cash cost of the treatment. Instagram

This redemption option can make a luxury spa experience more accessible. However, it's important to weigh the point redemption value against the cash price and consider the overall experience, including any potential facility issues that might arise. Reddit

When considering using points, compare the redemption rate to the current cash price for the desired treatment. This will help you determine if it's the best use of your loyalty points for your vacation budget and priorities. Instagram
