What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Palancar Reef are mixed, with some visitors praising its underwater formations and marine life, while others express disappointment over perceived coral degradation and a lack of fish populations, attributing this to environmental factors and tourism impact. While divers may find more to appreciate in the reef's structure, snorkelers might find other Caribbean locations more vibrant.
"Well, it would seem that people that think this is a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving just haven't gone anywhere better.
The condition of the Corals are absolutely abysmal from the cruise ship traffic. Most of it is dead and covered with detritus, Coral sand, and yellow algae. The fish populations are almost non-existent compared to other parts in the world. There are other parts of the Caribbean that have much better snorkeling and Diving. Curacao in Bonaire are two of them. The whole Mexican straight has been wiped out.
I gave it twostars and not one just because I love snorkeling and scuba diving. It's not the reefs fault it's been destroyed"
Old Pro Chef
"Been there before. Going back for a wedding. Can't wait."
Flexhaug Preece
"The reef is dead. Nothing to see there anymore. Soooo sad. There is more fish served in the ceviche on the boat ... Maybe better if you go diving, but not for snorkling."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When choosing a tour, look for operators that are experienced with families and can accommodate children. Ensure that snorkeling gear suitable for kids is available. While Palancar Reef itself might be more suited for older children or adults due to depth and currents, the overall boat trip and other reef stops can be very enjoyable for the whole family.
