The Legend of the Caged Angel: This is perhaps the most famous legend of the pantheon. It is said that a beautiful marble statue of an angel was placed on the tomb of Doña María Ponce de León. Shortly after, loud flapping sounds began to be heard at night, and some claimed to see the silhouette of a person flying near the tomb. The rumors became so strong that the family decided to build a cage around the statue to prevent the angel from "escaping." The gravediggers still tell of seeing the angel wandering around at night and returning to guard Doña María's tomb. It is even said that at the top of the cage, two open bars can be seen, as if the angel had tried with all its might to escape.
The Guardian Cats: A more recent legend tells of the numerous cats that inhabit the pantheon. It is believed that these felines have the ability to communicate with the afterlife and that their purrs are a channel for establishing a link between the earthly and spiritual worlds.
