Did you know Cancun has its own flea markets called tianguis? 👀 I had to check it out for myself 😎. A tianguis is like a pop-up market that’s been around since pre-Hispanic times, where people traded food, clothes, and handmade goods. Fast forward to today, and you can find everything—shoes, food, electronics, jewelry, even get your nails done while you shop 💅🏾. I didn’t buy much this time, just a...

"Mercado 23 vs Mercado 28
Mercado 23 u will be buying amongst locals. Lot cheaper, you can actually negotiate for prices. Less hagglers
5pesos to use restroom. Bring extra tissue paper with u :) check for roaches too.
This is similar to a wet market. Great for souvenirs. We went on a Sunday and they were busy esp before dia de muertos.. If u see a line, it means locally made tacos.. tia and tios made them fresh. Meat shop and cheese. Take uber or take a bus ..
Mercado 28 ehhh... blah.. not for me. I like mercado 23 better"

"We had an unfortunate and disappointing experience at the Coral Negro Flea Market in Cancún, specifically at Local 19. We were scammed out of $100 USD by an individual named Sergio.

We had agreed on a purchase totaling $20 USD, but when it came time to pay, Sergio behaved suspiciously and ultimately charged us $120 USD without our consent. When we questioned the charge, he became evasive and unhelpful.

Despite hearing warnings from other tourists about potential scams in Cancún, we chose to give the benefit of the doubt and support local vendors. Sadly, this experience confirmed those concerns. We left feeling disappointed and taken advantage of."

"Advise: Haggle. Nice Place to buy things but There was a Boot Store where a Elderly Guy tried to sell same stuff thrice the price than Others. Avoid Scammers."

Navigating the Market: Tips from Travelers

The Hotel Zone Flea Market, often referred to as a 'tianguis,' offers a glimpse into traditional Mexican commerce. Unlike the more curated shops, this market is a bustling hub where locals and tourists alike can find a wide array of goods. Haggling is not just recommended, it's expected. Vendors often start with a higher price, so be prepared to negotiate politely but firmly. Asking for prices in Mexican Pesos is crucial, as dollar conversions can be misleading and lead to overpaying. TikTokReddit

Many visitors recommend visiting on a Sunday when the market is particularly lively, attracting local shoppers as well as tourists. This is also a great time to sample authentic street food, with vendors serving up fresh tacos and other local delights. Reddit While the atmosphere is generally friendly, be aware of potential scams. Some travelers have reported instances of being overcharged or misled. Always confirm the final price before making a payment and be wary of any suspicious behavior. Reddit

Getting to the market is straightforward. The local R-1 and R-2 buses are the most convenient and affordable option for those staying in the Hotel Zone. TikTok For a more local experience, consider Mercado 23, which is less tourist-oriented and offers lower prices, though it's more of a wet market with fewer souvenir options. Reddit

Souvenir Shopping Strategies

When hunting for souvenirs at the Hotel Zone Flea Market, remember that authenticity and price can vary greatly. While you can find beautiful handmade crafts, textiles, and traditional Mexican items, it's wise to shop around before making a purchase. Compare prices at different stalls for similar items. TikTokReddit

Don't hesitate to engage with the vendors; many are friendly and happy to chat about their products. However, be firm in your negotiations. A common tactic is to offer about 50-70% of the initial asking price and work your way up. Reddit If a vendor seems overly aggressive or evasive, it might be a sign to move on. Remember, the goal is to find a unique memento at a fair price, not to feel pressured into a bad deal. Reddit

For those seeking a more local shopping experience away from the typical tourist crowds, Mercado 23 is often cited as a better alternative for authentic goods and lower prices, though it's more of a traditional market. Reddit However, the Hotel Zone Flea Market still offers a convenient and vibrant shopping experience for many visitors looking for typical Mexican souvenirs. TikTok
