"Visited Sanctuary of Our Lady on a weekday morning. Places nearby for coffee, snacks and meals. The parish church was closed in Friday late morning and early afternoon with locked doors.
Inside the Sanctuary of Our Lady, one is able to view a painting by St. Luke on stone of the Madonna and child. There is also a human relic to the right side of the altar. Behind the door is a wall adorned with multiple personal stories testifying to healing miracles which range from female infertility, childhood sicknesses and deformity to ailing geriatrics. A small gift shop is available for purchase of holy water, holy oil, small statues, tapestry and various trinkets.
Prayer requests can be written in a large book inside the gift shop or written on a piece of paper and placed in a large wooden box which is visible immediately upon entry to the Sanctuary.
After visiting the Sanctuary on a Friday, I returned for mass on Saturday. Services are held Monday through Saturday at 8:30 am and Sunday at 10 am in English."

History and Legends of the Sanctuary
Legends surrounding the sanctuary are a significant part of its allure. One prominent belief is that the sanctuary's altarpiece, a Byzantine-style fresco of the Madonna and Child, was blessed by Saint Luke himself. This fresco, believed to date back to the late 12th or early 13th century, is considered miraculous and has drawn countless pilgrims throughout history. Another fascinating aspect is the connection to ancient worship; some traditions link the cave to the nymph Calypso, predating Christian influence. The transformation from a pagan sanctuary to a Christian one is said to have occurred with the arrival of Saint Paul in 60 AD.
Today, the sanctuary continues to be a pilgrimage site, attracting visitors who seek spiritual solace, healing, and connection to its rich past. The walls adorned with personal stories of healing miracles serve as a powerful testament to the enduring faith and the sanctuary's reputation for intercession.
The Grotto of Our Lady: A Sacred Descent
The Grotto is an integral part of the pilgrimage experience, offering a more intimate and ancient spiritual atmosphere. It is believed to be an even older site of worship than the main sanctuary, with some traditions suggesting it was a place of veneration long before Christianity arrived in Malta. The descent into the grotto itself is often described as a journey of reflection and devotion.
Visitors often find the Grotto to be a place of profound peace and spiritual connection. The simple, natural setting of the cave, combined with its historical and religious significance, makes it a compelling stop for those exploring the Mellieha sanctuary complex.
Architectural and Artistic Treasures
The artistic heart of the sanctuary is undoubtedly the Byzantine-style fresco of the Madonna and Child, attributed to Saint Luke. This ancient artwork is not only a masterpiece of religious art but is also believed to possess miraculous healing powers, drawing pilgrims seeking divine intervention. The walls within the sanctuary are also adorned with numerous personal stories and testimonials from individuals who believe they have experienced healing miracles, ranging from infertility to recovery from serious illnesses.
Beyond the main sanctuary, the surrounding area also offers architectural interest. The nearby Parish Church of Mellieha, accessed via stairs from the square, presents another significant religious landmark. The overall architectural ensemble in Mellieha, including the sanctuary, contributes to the town's rich cultural heritage.
