"Such an important of history and achievement- wel preserved but could have more exposure as it is now wedged in between roads"

frank van steenbergen

"The foundation of Valletta presented the Knights of St. John with a major problem: sufficient drinking water. The Sciberras Peninsula did not have sufficient water sources, so water had to be transported. However, by the end of the 16th century, Valletta's population had grown so large that the supply capacity was no longer sufficient. In 1596, construction of an aqueduct from the sources at Dingli and Rabat to Valletta began, but construction was suspended shortly afterwards for financial reasons. In 1610, construction continued under the direction of Grand Master De Wignacourt, who largely financed the project. Some 600 workers built the aqueducts and underground conduits in 4 years, with a total length of 26.5 km. The project was officially inaugurated on 21 April 1615, and Valletta was now guaranteed a steady water supply, even in times of siege. The system supplied 1,400 m3 of water to the capital city every day, allowing the population to continue to grow. In 1781 the aqueduct was improved by Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, and remained in use as the main water source until the early 20th century. In 2004-2005 the aqueduct was (thankfully) restored so that this piece of history is preserved for Malta."

Its primary purpose was to solve a critical problem for Valletta: a lack of sufficient fresh water. The aqueduct stretches approximately 26.5 kilometers, channeling water from sources in Dingli and Rabat all the way to the capital city. Construction began in 1596 but was suspended, only to be resumed and largely completed between 1610 and 1614 under Wignacourt's direction, with the project officially inaugurated in 1615. This vital infrastructure ensured a steady supply of water, crucial for the growing population and for withstanding potential sieges. Reddit
