What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Penang Bird Park offers a diverse collection of over 300 bird species in walk-in aviaries, providing unique close-up encounters. While many visitors appreciate the variety of birds and engaging shows, significant concerns have been raised regarding park maintenance, animal welfare, and the high cost of entry and onsite purchases. Some visitors report issues with cleanliness, animal health, and inadequate enclosures, contrasting with others who found the birds active and the experience worthwhile.
"Visited on saturday morning. Ticket was quite pricey. Every drinks, ice cream and snacks sold inside was pricey. Quite disappointed with the condition. Most of the birds are not well maintained as some lost their feathers obviously, rabbits all sick with visible wounds on their bodies, dirty green ponds attracts mosquitos and we were asked to buy the mosquito repellent from the counter if would like. Price is Rm 18. Some of the birds are unique and the white macaw can actually say hi was quite impressive. Lots of empty cages and not happy birds. Sick animals. If they improve the park with some efforts, it will be a nice place to visit with kids and will worth the pricey tickets."

Issues such as stagnant, mosquito-attracting ponds, and animals appearing unwell with feather loss or visible wounds have been frequently mentioned. Some enclosures are described as too small for the occupants, leading to observations of stressed birds.
Despite these criticisms, many visitors still find the park worthwhile, especially for the unique bird species and the opportunity to see them up close. The bird shows are often cited as a fun and engaging part of the visit. For those planning a trip, it's advisable to manage expectations regarding the park's upkeep and to come prepared with insect repellent and comfortable footwear.
Photography Opportunities and Tips
To make the most of your photography experience, consider bringing a camera with good zoom capabilities and fast autofocus. Features like Animal Eye AF, as highlighted by one user, can be invaluable for keeping fast-moving birds in sharp focus. Fast shutter speeds are essential to freeze motion, and experimenting with aperture settings can help control depth of field.
While personal photography is generally welcomed, be mindful of the park's policies regarding professional shoots. Also, remember that some special photoshoot opportunities with animals are offered at an additional cost, which some visitors have found to be quite high.
Animal Welfare and Park Maintenance Concerns
For instance, one visitor noted that rabbits had visible wounds, and an ostrich appeared isolated with an eye disease. Eagles were reportedly kept in cages that were significantly undersized for their needs. These observations have led some visitors to question the adequacy of the care provided to the animals and the park's commitment to their well-being.
While the park boasts a large number of bird species and offers unique encounters, these welfare concerns are significant for many potential visitors. The high entrance fee, coupled with these issues, has led to disappointment for some. It is hoped that the management will address these points to improve the park's conditions and ensure a better experience for both animals and visitors.
