What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Umbai Ikan Bakar Village is a popular spot for fresh, affordable seafood, with many visitors praising the grilled fish, calamari, and otak-otak. The lively atmosphere and friendly service are often highlighted. However, some reviews mention inconsistencies in food quality and preparation, with occasional issues like sandy clams or bland sauces.
"Sorry to say this.
Food:
Otak-otak: 4/5. Well cooked, tasty.
Coconut jelly: also 4/5.
Fried calamari: 5/5. Really delicious!
Nasi lemak: freshly cooked, but the rice was too soft because it didn’t have time to dry. The sambal was just average, and there were no anchovies or egg. At least add a little, then it would be more worth the price.
Sweet & sour clams:
Ordered ½ kg clams, but most were sandy.
The gravy didn’t taste good, and the color wasn’t appealing—maybe because no proper sauce was used.
Grilled stingray:
They served the stingray dry like that. They should have asked whether we wanted it grilled with sambal or plain. When we requested sambal, they just added a little on top!
Conclusion: They need a real chef."

"Medan Ikan Bakar Pernu in Melaka is spacious, featuring numerous seafood restaurants. It is clean and, judging by its size, accommodates a large number of visitors. Nearby is the jetty to Pulau Besar. Highly recommended. No 4 Pesona served tasty ikan siakap 3 rasa and ikan bakar, and sotong telor masin. They used a whole salted egg. You can see small chunks of the salted egg.
Loved the small packs of nasi lemak. They will bring those out upon requests."

"Medan Ikan Bakar Pernu/Umbai food court is a vibrant destination with various stalls offering fresh seafood. I dined at stall no. 4, Pesona Ikan Bakar, and the experience was delightful. The fish and cuttlefish were incredibly fresh and flavorful. The food court has a modern, upgraded look, making it tidy and clean. There is ample parking available for just RM2.00. I highly recommend this spot if you're visiting Melaka."

The Umbai Ikan Bakar Experience
Visitors often praise the freshness of the seafood and the affordable prices. It's a place where you can indulge in a variety of marine delights without breaking the bank. While the village offers a communal dining experience, individual stalls compete for customers, leading to a vibrant and sometimes bustling environment.
It's important to note that while many reviews are positive, some visitors have pointed out inconsistencies in food quality and preparation. This is common in large food courts where multiple vendors operate. Doing a quick scan of stalls and observing what other diners are enjoying can be a good strategy.
Navigating the Stalls and Selection
When selecting your seafood, look for bright eyes and firm flesh in fish, and clear, plump bodies in prawns and squid. Don't hesitate to ask the vendors about the origin of their catch or their recommended cooking methods. Some stalls specialize in certain preparations, like sambal stingray or butter prawns.
While many stalls offer similar dishes, the preparation and taste can differ. Some visitors recommend specific stalls based on their positive experiences, so it might be worth asking locals or fellow travelers for recommendations. The key is to find a stall that appears busy, indicating good turnover and fresh ingredients.
