Reviews Summary

Junk Book Store offers a unique and eclectic collection, particularly for journaling and rare book enthusiasts. While many praise the interesting finds and friendly staff, some visitors report feeling pressured by sales tactics and find certain prices steep for second-hand items. The experience can be a mixed bag, depending on your tolerance for sales engagement and your expectations for pricing.

"Rarebooks but salesy aunties honed by years of experience - better than credit card sales man.

Good collection, very cool place. Mind the steep price (for second handbooks) can go from RM150-1,000++.

Unless you’re a lazy collector some (rare) books can be bought online for a fraction of the price. RM1,000 quoted vs IDR175K (RM50) if you search Tokopedia (Indonesia)."

"We stopped by Junk Book Store on our way to Pasar Seni, not realising it was 15 minutes before their 2pm Saturday closing. One of the two ladies on duty was visibly irritated the moment we walked in.

When we asked about Malay/Indonesian literature, she reluctantly brought us to a locked room upstairs. It was dusty, the books were in terrible condition, and most were overpriced old biographies. Seriously nothing like what we asked for. The whole interaction felt unwelcoming from the start.

As we were leaving, despite us apologising for the trouble, she muttered to her colleague in Cantonese, “what a waste of time.” That pretty much summed up the experience.

A disappointing visit and easily the rudest treatment we’ve encountered in a bookstore. Would not recommend."

"Like the others in the review, i also got forced into buying things which was crazy. i just KNOW the saleslady made up the prices on the spot cause she didn’t want to tell me ANY of the prices when i asked her HOW MUCH. and then when i went to buy a few stamps just to stay safe, she told me one SECONDHAND stamp was rm10? that’s absurd. you’re selling JUNK items. not some branded vintage stuff. i hope people don’t come here lol"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of the Deal: Pricing and Haggling

Junk Book Store is known for its eclectic collection of second-hand and rare books, but pricing can be a point of contention for some visitors. Prices can range dramatically, from relatively affordable finds to significantly expensive rare editions, sometimes exceeding RM1,000. Reddit This variability means that haggling is not just recommended, it's often expected, especially for older or more unique items. Travelers suggest that prices might be set on the spot by sales staff, making negotiation a key part of the purchasing process. TikTok

It's important to approach the negotiation with a realistic understanding of the book's value and condition. While some rare books might command higher prices, be aware that similar items could potentially be found online for less. Reddit However, the charm of Junk Book Store lies in the discovery and the thrill of the bargain, making the negotiation process an integral part of the shopping experience for many.

Navigating the Sales Experience

The sales approach at Junk Book Store is frequently mentioned in reviews and social media. While some staff are described as knowledgeable and friendly, others can be quite persistent, leading to a feeling of being pressured to buy. TikTokReddit This is particularly true if you express interest in a book or ask about specific sections. Some visitors have reported feeling uncomfortable with the intensity of the sales tactics, with one reviewer noting that staff seemed irritated by browsing without immediate purchase. Reddit

To make the most of your visit, it's helpful to be clear about your intentions. If you're there purely to browse, be polite but firm. If you're looking for something specific, don't hesitate to ask, but be prepared for offers and suggestions. The unique character of the store includes its sales dynamic, so managing expectations and understanding this aspect can lead to a more positive experience. Remember that the store's business model relies on sales, and engaging with the staff, even if it feels a bit pushy, is part of the local flavor. TikTok
