What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This street art zone offers a quick and colorful photo opportunity with diverse artistic styles on its pillars, often featuring conservation-themed animals. While some visitors note recent repainting to a blue ocean theme that may detract from the original art, it remains a convenient and free attraction near Suria Sabah mall. The ruins of the Old Welfare Building add a unique backdrop, though occasional litter has been mentioned.
"Update as of 23 Dec 2024, just left the painted columns. Remnants of beer bottles and sunflower seeds. I wanted to see if there was anything nice for my family to take pictures during our stay. You can give this a miss"

"When I was looking for reviews about this place it looked quite cool with all the street art from different artists, it was quite vivid and diverse. However, when I came to the actual spot, everything was repainted to blue in some lame ocean theme , like kindergarten water park.😒 It is sad to see that whoever did this doesn’t understand the concept, beauty and essence of street art."

"Do you have 5 minutes to spare?
This place is located at just a stone-throw away from the "Suria Sabah" shopping mall. Looks a bit deliberate to have so many painted pillars standing among the town buildings but its all part of an exhibition. Each individual pillar has a different and unique kind of style, art and story to it.
There is a backdrop of a partial torn-down building with more graffiti. Gives a slightly spooky feel to it even though it is in broad daylight. There are also some drawings at the rear of the walls.
Overall a great quick and photo-worthy place if you happen to be nearby and have 5 minutes to spare =)"

The Art and Its Evolution
However, the nature of street art means it's subject to change. Recent visitor feedback indicates that some sections have been repainted with a uniform blue ocean theme, which has been met with mixed reactions. While some appreciate the fresh look, others feel it detracts from the original artistic diversity and the essence of street art. It's advisable to manage expectations and be aware that the appearance might differ from older photos.
Despite these changes, the area remains a popular spot for a quick, colorful photo opportunity. The juxtaposition of vibrant art against the backdrop of the old building ruins creates a unique urban aesthetic. It's a testament to the dynamic nature of public art and how it evolves within a city.
Visitor Experience and Practicalities
While the art is the main draw, some visitors have noted that the area might occasionally have remnants of litter, such as beer bottles and sunflower seeds. This suggests that while it's a public art space, upkeep can vary. For those looking for amenities, it's best to head to the nearby mall, as the street art zone itself is purely an artistic display without facilities.
Despite these minor points, the zone is considered a 'great quick and photo-worthy place' by many, especially if you have a few minutes to spare and are looking for a colorful backdrop. It offers a glimpse into local artistic expression in an urban setting.
