What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the magical, mystical atmosphere of the Mossy Forest, calling it a unique and beautiful hiking experience. The challenging, rooty, and muddy trails are noted, requiring good footwear and preparation. While the summit offers rewarding views, the journey through the enchanting forest is the primary highlight for most.
"Beautiful forest to hike through, and a few nice panoramas on the way. Decent view at the top too! Don't get fooled by the "mini-Irau" signs, there's still a fair way to go to reach the real peak. Go prepared and enjoy the temperature and surroundings, and it will be a nice day of exercise.
Its quite a technical hike, so more strenuous than expected. So. Many. Roots! Lots of trip hazards, and easy to bash your head or shins on branches and roots if you aren't paying attention! Numerous inclines and declines. About 3.5 hours up, 2.5 back.
We travelled the access road around 7am, and many of the drainage gutters perpendicular to the road were missing their coverings. These are wide enough for a wheel to completely drop, so you would need a 4x4 (luckily I had brought mine). However when we returned impromptu covers had been replaced/created and normal cars (even little Myvis!) had been able to reach the trail head."

"Gunung Irau peak at 2,110m. One of the entrance to Gunung Irau is hiking via Mossy Forest. Up and down track towards the peak of Irau. Moderate hiking will take you around 3 hours hiking with multiple stops along the route"

"The trail starts from Mossy forest and then the trek starts to Gunung Irau on the left. There will be clear hiking path up to Gunung Irau.
Do be careful because you would be walking on tree branches as the mud is very deep. So a good shoe that is slip resistant is important. You should also bring a good poncho as we got thin poncho from the shops and it wasn't enough.
You do not need a guide or tour to climb up the mountain. We hitchhiked from the Petronas gas station up to the mountain as there are many visitors and locals coming up."

The Enchanting Mossy Forest
The high altitude of Gunung Irau (2,110 meters) contributes to the cloud rainforest conditions, where moisture is abundant. This allows for the unique flora to thrive. Visitors often remark on the sheer beauty and tranquility of this section of the hike, despite the challenging terrain. It's a stark contrast to the more manicured tea plantations often associated with Cameron Highlands.
Navigating the Mossy Forest requires careful footing. The ground can be extremely muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Many hikers recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots with excellent grip to avoid slips and falls. The trail is also characterized by numerous exposed tree roots, which can act as natural steps but also pose tripping hazards. Paying close attention to your surroundings is key to a safe and enjoyable experience in this magical environment.
Hiking Gunung Irau: Challenges and Rewards
Despite the physical demands, the rewards are substantial. Reaching the summit of Gunung Irau, the highest peak in Cameron Highlands, offers a sense of accomplishment and often provides rewarding views, though these can be obscured by mist. The journey itself, however, is a major part of the appeal. The unique flora and fauna encountered along the trail, combined with the cool, crisp mountain air, make for an invigorating experience.
Many hikers advise starting early to avoid the midday heat and potential afternoon showers, and to allow ample time for the descent. The forest can get dark quickly, so turning back by early afternoon is a safety recommendation. The trail is generally well-defined, but caution is always advised, especially on steeper or more exposed sections.
