Reviews Summary

Lokobe Marine Reserve offers opportunities to see local wildlife like lemurs and chameleons, with easy access via canoe. However, some visitors have reported concerns about unethical animal handling by guides and a zoo-like experience. The market area with performing children also elicits mixed reactions.

"My review is of someone who spent weeks exploring Madagascar's national Park. I had the worst experience of all at Lokobe: packed with tourists in flip flops totally unprepared. The guides do not respect wildlife, they touch and grab animals to show them off to tourists, dropping them along the way. They feed the lemurs, which is totally unacceptable. Overall this park offers a zoo-like experience to beach goers staying in Nosy Be. Not recommended."

John

"This was not a great experience, more like a zoo, with a quick walk around a small secondary forest where the guides man-handled and dropped cameleons and baited the lemurs with food so the tourists could pet them. Nocturnal mouse lemurs were tormented by the encouraged flash photos while in man made dens.

You go over with a canoe, either paddled or attached to a motor, and spend most of the visit wandering a small market with souvenirs and feeling bad about the small children twerking for tips. It’s a shame that the thoughtless tourism on the island has encouraged this. I’m hopeful that better, ecological and ethical opportunities will come out in Nosy Be, and that the community in Lokobe will be able to have better opportunities. but if you are the type to come only here, only for the cheap evening thrills and Instagram shots of lemurs without having to think, then maybe you will love this…

Side note: if you do come, don’t tip people who help you in Euro coins. It’s embarrassing and they have to run around trying to get someone to change it to currency you can actually spend there. Get some local currency like an adult"
