What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Travelers find the Macau Light Rail Transit a clean, modern, and convenient option, especially for reaching the airport and ferry terminal. While not always the most direct route for locals, it offers tourists a scenic and affordable way to see the city's skyline. Some note the limited payment options and the lack of a day pass.
"A little bit near😅 from the tower... way cheaper than a taxi...
The place is clean, card is available for tourist purchase via kiosk...
Easy to understand directions..."
Cherie May (CM LI)
"Nice experience for tourist, not very convenient but nice scenery along the trip. Locals generally do not get on it, and tourists can choose the free shuttle from casinos, so pretty spacious."
Francis Chau
"We thought we’d ride the light rail to Barra. The station looks fairly new and is clean. The ticket machines are self explanatory in English. There was an aide to guide us at the information booth. Note: the machines or the information booth only accepts MOP cash.
You can only purchase a one way ticket. There isn’t a day pass or round trip ticket you can purchase. Once you pay, you are given a plastic token which is inserted into the slot upon exiting the station."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider purchasing an M-Card if you plan on using the LRT multiple times during your visit, as it saves time queuing for tickets. While the LRT doesn't cover all of Macau, it's a great way to connect between key points on Taipa, such as the airport and ferry terminal, offering a more relaxed alternative to buses or taxis for shorter journeys.
💰 Budget Travelers
To maximize savings and convenience, familiarize yourself with the payment options. Having MOP cash is essential, or utilizing mobile payment apps like WeChat Pay or Alipay can be useful. While there's no day pass, the cost per ride is still very reasonable for the convenience it provides.

Understanding the Macau LRT Network
Future expansions are planned to extend the network, including a line connecting to Hengqin Port, which opened in December 2024, offering a direct link to Zhuhai City in mainland China. The LRT system is characterized by its modern, driverless trains, offering passengers a unique and smooth travel experience with panoramic views of the city.
While the LRT is a fantastic option for visitors, it's worth noting that locals may still prefer other modes of transport like buses or casino shuttles due to established habits or specific route coverage. However, for tourists seeking a convenient, affordable, and scenic way to navigate Taipa, the LRT is highly recommended.
Ticketing and Payment Made Easy
It's important to note that the ticket machines and information booths only accept MOP (Macanese Pataca) cash. However, for those who prefer digital payments, options like WeChat Pay and Alipay are also accepted. For frequent travelers or those who want to avoid the hassle of buying individual tickets, purchasing an M-Card is a smart choice. This rechargeable card can be topped up and used for seamless travel, eliminating the need to queue for tickets.
Travelers coming from Hong Kong might be familiar with the Octopus card. However, it's crucial to be aware that the Octopus card is not yet compatible with the Macau LRT system. Therefore, ensure you have MOP cash or a compatible mobile payment method ready for your journey.
Capturing the Macau LRT Experience
For the best photographic results, consider traveling during the 'golden hours' around sunrise or sunset. The soft, warm light can dramatically enhance the city's architecture and create stunning visual narratives. Evenings are also a great time to capture the city lights, offering a different but equally captivating perspective.
When shooting, a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture both the expansive city views and the interior of the modern train carriages. Smartphones with good low-light performance are also effective, especially for capturing the illuminated city at night. Remember to be respectful of other passengers and avoid disruptive flash photography.
