Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Barra Square for its historical significance and vibrant atmosphere, particularly the proximity to the revered A-Ma Temple. The area offers a glimpse into Macau's rich maritime past. Some find the immediate surroundings can be busy, and navigating public transport requires a bit of planning.
"Where you find UNESCO World Heritage attraction - A-Ma Temple as well as a the interesting Maritime Museum in Macau. Barra Square is also one of the popular places to visit during the CNY holiday. There is much festive activity taking place on the square at this time of year.
Another main reason for visiting Barra Square during CNY is the Pinwheel and Incense fair that takes place here from New Years Eve until the end of the first day of the New Year. You'll find 10-12 stands lining the street side of the square, opposite to A-Ma Temple. They are filled with shiny and colourful pinwheels as well as incense of all shapes and sizes. These can be purchased and then taken into the temple grounds to be burnt for good luck.
The square is quite lively throughout the holiday time. It is also very busy when the Dragon Parade passes by on its journey through the Historic Centre of Macau. The dragon stops here after racing its way down Rua Padre Antonio/Calcada de Barra and entering Barra Square.
Lion Dances and other CNY festivities take place at Barra Square during CNY holiday period as well. Check the MGTO What's On Macau guide at the beginning of the month before your visit to see date and times."

"A-Ma Temple Square is where the Portuguese first landed in Macau, marking the starting point of the integration of Chinese and Portuguese cultures. Macau's name derives from a Chinese goddess revered by fishermen—the Queen of Heaven (also known as Mazu), also known as Niangma. Legend has it that a fishing boat was sailing on a clear, calm day when it was suddenly struck by a violent thunderstorm, leaving the fishermen in dire straits. In this critical moment, a young woman bravely stepped forward and commanded the storm to cease. The wind immediately died down, the sea calmed, and the fishing boat safely reached Haijing Harbor. After landing, the young woman walked toward A-Ma Hill. Suddenly, a halo shone, and the girl disintegrated into a wisp of smoke. Later, a temple was built at the spot where she landed, dedicated to Niangma.
In the mid-16th century, when the first Portuguese arrived in Macau, they asked the residents the name of the area. The residents, mistakenly thinking they meant the temple, replied "A-Ma." The Portuguese translated the name into "MACAU," which became the Portuguese name for Macau."
