What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Luxembourg City Museum for its innovative panoramic lift and the immersive circular painting, offering a unique historical journey. While some find the content less engaging than expected, the modern interior design within old buildings and the scenic terrace views are consistently highlighted as positives. The low entry fee and amenities like free water and lockers add to its appeal.
"Entrance fee: €5. Opens at 10am and closed on Mondays. It is upsetting that they refused to let me in earlier to wait indoors even though it's pouring outside and I was there just 10 mins before opening hours. Well at least they weren't racist as another group of US visitors were also made to wait outside in the cold and wetness.
Brief history of the city, in terms of content, I didn't find much interesting but I would still recommend visiting to see the building itself. It's housed in old buildings from the Middle Ages, but they've done a great job with the interior design that preserved the charming old stone structures while incorporating modern tech such as the panoramic lift that is surrounded by these walls. On Level 2, there's also a terrace one can walk out to for a scenic view of the surroundings but unfortunately it was raining when I was there so I didn't make it out onto the terrace.
The exhibit that left the deepest impression here is the Panoramic circular painting. Spanning 17m in length, it depicts architectural landscape and everyday life in Luxembourg under Spanish rule. Amazing painting, standing in the middle of it really makes you feel like you are in the town, walking in the middle of the street.
Backpacks are not allowed in the museum but they do have free lockers for you to store them. I also appreciate that they offer free water dispenser here and of course, clean toilets. I was done in about 1.5 hrs covering the 3 floors slowly."

"The museum is very interesting and cognitive. There are 5 floors showing the history of Luxembourg from foundation to the modern day. Lots of historical artefacts, pictures and models of the city at different times. There’s a beautiful view from the top terrace and very slow moving glass elevator."

"Beautiful museum, very informative. We arrived in Luxembourg in the early afternoon with the goal of exploring the city and getting a few bites to eat. My partner wanted to explore this museum. It was €5 per person. Reception was very friendly and explained how to go through the museum— bottom to top.
The 4th floor was unfortunately closed for renovations, so we were unable to see that. However, the rest of the museum was extremely detailed. We loved the topological maps on the lower levels.
Our favorite section was floor 5. You can get postcard paper and stamp it throughout the exhibit, creating a wonderful view of Luxembourg."
