"A very beautiful monument, especially in the evening"

Mantas Brazdžionis

"Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis monument was put in this place in 1975, on the centenential jubileum of the most famous Lithuanian composer and painter. As a guide, I can tell you it is authored by sculptor Vladas Vildžiūnas and architect Rimantas Povilas Dičius and is one of the best examples of local monumentalism. At Brezhnev times, it was a risky project, as the “angel wings” of the sculpture did not correspond to the norms of social realism. The local authorities even removed the sculpture of Soviet partisan Marija Melnik, thus causing a series of complaints, however they were brushed off by local communist authorities // The monument to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, perhaps the most famous person of Druskininkai and Dzūkija of all time, was created by sculptor Vildžiūnas and architects Dičius, R. Mickevičius for the 100th anniversary of the sculptor and painter. It is strange to remember today, but as a guide I can confirm – the monument was feared due to its architectural inconsistencies with the canons of socialist realism, and during its construction, Marija Melnikaitė of Antinios, who stood here, was also attracted. Nevertheless, the sculpture was awarded the Republican Prize, further establishing Vildžiūnas as the quintessential sculptor of Soviet Lithuania of the 70s. According to legend, Brazauskas and Žalys stopped the construction of Lenin in Klaipėda in order to “transfer” red granite to Druskininkai for this monument."
