What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are deeply moved by the ancient Assumption Church and the spiritual energy of Lykhny Glade, praising its remarkably preserved 10th-century frescoes and historical significance. While photography is prohibited inside, the profound atmosphere and the presence of sacred relics leave a lasting impression. Some note the minimal facilities and the need for respectful attire.
"It is well known that in the 15th century, the Christian faith became unpopular among the population of Abkhazia. But the Assumption Cathedral in the village of Lykhny was not destroyed by the grace of the princely family of Shervashidze, whose representatives remained adherents of Christianity for a long time. Later, they nevertheless adopted the Islamic faith, but the Assumption Cathedral was still left untouched. The energy here is amazing, tears rolled down both my husband and me 🙏"

"The entrance, which was outwardly unremarkable, revealed to my gaze the rarest splendor of Byzantine architecture.
I can't say that I am so sentimental, but the energy here is amazing, real, despite the modest decoration and small size. Comparing it with previously seen temples, I would call it comparable to the temples of Belaya Gora in the Perm region and the Vatican.
Everything is in the original as is: wall paintings from the 10th-11th centuries, Byzantine frescoes with inscriptions in Greek date back to the 14th century.
I didn't have time to take many pictures, because a nun materialized and made us an atata.
Inside the temple there are two burials: Count Safar-Bey Shervashidze, the youngest son of the ruling prince of Abkhazia Keleshbey Chachba Safarbey, in baptism George.
He was a Muslim for a long time, before his death he converted to Christianity, and was one of the first princes to accept Russian citizenship.
The second burial of his grandson, Georgy, the son of the last ruling prince of the country, Mikhail Chachba-Shervashidze.
Afterwards, I met that same nun and we had a nice heart-to-heart talk without strangers. I learned a lot of interesting things that you won’t find in Internet reference books.
But this will remain behind the scenes.
Summing up the results of the day, I can confidently say that this trip was one of the best.
The place really has power, even though it sounds unscientific.
A must-see when there are no visiting tourists."

"A functioning Orthodox church, preserved in its original form since the 10th century. It contains many very old icons.
In my opinion, it's a must-see. There's a reservoir of holy water near the left exit; you can fill it.
The church also has an icon that streamed myrrh; you can venerate it."
