"Legend? A simple stone with only her name, and year of birth and death reminds the visitor of the "Turaidas Roze" ("Rose of Turaida"). In May 1601, a clerk of Turaida Castle finds a baby in the arms of her dead mother after a battle. He names the child Maija (after the month she was found) and raises her as his own. She grows up to be a very beautiful young woman nicknamed "the Rose of Turaida". She falls in love with Viktor, the gardener of Sigulda Castle, and they always meet in Gutman's Cave, halfway between the two castles. When they are making plans to get married in 1620, the Polish soldier Adam Jakubowski crosses her path. Enchanted by her beauty, he wants to marry her, but she rejects him firmly. An angry Jakubowski then sends her a fake message and when she arrives at Gutman's Cave he wants to force her to marry him. Trapped, Maija promises Jakubowski her "magical" red scarf, a gift from Viktor, if he lets her go. She encourages Jakubowski to test the invulnerability powers of the scarf while she is still wearing it around her neck. He strikes, and Maija falls to the ground dead. Jakubowski flees into the woods and hangs himself. When Viktor finds his dead lover in the evening, he is initially accused of murder, but the testimony of Skudritis, a friend of Jakubowski who had witnessed everything, exonerates him. Maija is buried near the church of Turaida Castle. For a long time it was believed that the story of the Rose of Turaida was just a legend, but 19th century archival research has shown that the story is actually true."
