Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Daugavgrīva Fortress for its authentic, free historical exploration, offering a unique 'found' atmosphere. While some find it run-down, many appreciate the raw, uncurated nature and the chance to wander through atmospheric ruins. The lack of extensive signage and facilities is noted, but the overall experience is seen as a captivating glimpse into the past.
"We have been living here a while and only recently found out about this great free piece of history to visit so close to Riga. The fortress can be entered from the south side - small amount of free parking near the entrance. Walk up the parh past a house and between a few ponds to get to the main arch/tunnel entrance. Once inside roam freely to explore all the open area and buildings throughout the old fortress area. There are some billboards inside some of the buildings to explain the long history of this place. There are many paths on the grounds so you can see all the sights without having to go bushwhacking hahaha. I really enjoyed the way it was maintained just enough to allow you to freely wander the area, but not brought up to a full curated museum. It is literally like you found this place in your travels - but maintained to be safe to visit. It is a perfect display of time reclaiming this once prominent point of defence. If you are in the area, definitely stop by. Thanks."

"I can’t find the entrance but I entered anyway and there are a lot of people it’s free. Many ruins besides the fortress and there is only Latvian on displace board. It was fun to go explore anyway."

"Quite run down and overgrown but an interesting place to see what once was. Bring a flashlight, seriously - some of the abandoned buildings are open and free to explore. It even says on some of them - use a flashlight. Phone flashlight is not enough, btw."
