What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Vientiane Railway Station is praised for its modern facilities and the comfortable, high-speed Laos-China Railway. Travelers appreciate the clean amenities and the convenience of ATMs and SIM card availability. However, some negative experiences with train staff and unofficial immigration fees have been reported, detracting from an otherwise positive travel experience.
"Very good station. toilet facilities are very good. Staff is very attractive. Everything is perfect. But no money exchange
Thai baht can be used for all transactions
ATM is there. SIM card available there. Transportation to city is okay. Bus taxes tuk tuk available"

"One of the examples of architectural gigantomania in a country that struggles with many problems but builds toilets on motorways that can handle 500 people at a time when almost no one uses the road because it has a price that no one can afford. Similarly, this station is almost the size of an airport and handles maybe 2 trains a day. Unfortunately, immigration workers also contribute to the bad image. They try to extort money from tourists by expecting them to pay 20 baht to leave the country (exit fee). Such a fee does not apply to anyone and is not officially stated anywhere. Outright theft accepted by the superiors of state employees who, when refused to pay, quickly give up on the pressure. But many people pay these invented fees without thinking. It would probably be easier to put out a box for a tip for nice service instead of inventing such embarrassing attempts at fraud, right?"

"Corruption alert ! The immigration officers will charge you ₭10,000 or ฿20 as a ‘stamp fee’. You’ll have to pay this, no matter your nationality (even I, as a Lao citizen, cannot escape it). If you can’t stomach donating 50 cents for the development and betterment of the nation, this is not the border crossing for you !
This is the same thing as the ‘stamp fees’ you can find at the Nongkhai border when crossing from Laos into Thailand (imposed by Thai officials, in that case).
After you pass through immigration, you’ll reach the waiting area. You can also cross back in, just show your stamp to the officer and they’ll let you across.
There are only 2 train lines a day, and the direct journey from Vientiane to Bangkok takes 12 hours. For your sanity, choose the second class AC sleeper seats.
The station is mostly empty. There is a coffee shop, money exchange stations, and that’s pretty much it. Hopefully the food court gets realized in the future.
Tip: When purchasing tickets for the SRT (State Railway of Thailand), which operates this line, use the d-ticket app to avoid the ridiculous up-charge that 12go has. You’ll save upwards of ฿300 in most cases."

Understanding Border Crossing Procedures
A recurring theme in reviews is the mention of unofficial 'stamp fees' or 'exit fees' demanded by immigration officers. These fees, often around 20 Thai Baht or 10,000 Lao Kip, are not officially recognized and can be a source of frustration. Some travelers have successfully refused to pay these fees, while others have opted to pay to avoid delays.
Update: As of February 2025, the acceptance of e-visas has been confirmed at the Vientiane Railway Station. If you have an e-visa, the process is reported to be quick and straightforward, requiring minimal interaction at the window. This should significantly improve the border crossing experience for many.
