What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Tha Heua Fish Market, once a convenient stop, now faces challenges due to the new Vang Vieng Expressway, making access more time-consuming. Visitors should adjust expectations as the market primarily offers dried or liquid-preserved fish, not fresh catches. It remains an interesting spot for cultural observation of local preservation methods.
"The fish market, which has an endemic supply of fish from the Ang Nam Gum reservoir, has lost many customers due to the Vang Vieng Expressway 13. Apparently hardly anyone takes the time-consuming detour to the Tha Heua fish market anymore to buy fish on the old road 13 with its many potholes. We can only hope that the Tha Heua fish market with local customers around 100m north of Tha Heua survives economically.
In February 2025, the market consisted of an approx. 85m row of covered wooden stalls approx. 100m north of Tha Heua along the old street 13.
We visited the market with the aim of buying a 1-2 kg fresh fish for a delicious meal. Unfortunately, the market offering only consisted of dried fish or smaller fish preserved in liquid in a plastic bag, which obviously do not require refrigeration in the warm climate. An interesting process for us. We decided not to purchase the long-lasting offer because it did not correspond to our intentions. It is therefore not possible to provide any information about the quality and taste of the offering."

The Impact of Infrastructure on Local Markets
This situation highlights a common challenge for local businesses in areas undergoing rapid infrastructure development. While new roads can boost overall tourism, they can also isolate established attractions if not carefully integrated. The market's survival may depend on attracting local customers or finding ways to appeal to tourists willing to venture off the main thoroughfare.
For visitors, understanding this context is crucial. It means the market is less about convenience and more about a deliberate exploration of local culture and commerce. The journey itself, on the older road, becomes part of the experience, offering a different perspective on the Laotian landscape.
Understanding Local Fish Preservation
This approach to preservation is a testament to traditional practices and resourcefulness. It allows the community to utilize their fish supply effectively, ensuring food security and providing goods for sale over longer periods. For visitors, it's an opportunity to witness and perhaps sample unique local products that differ significantly from Western market norms.
When visiting, it's important to approach these offerings with an open mind. The taste and texture will be different from fresh fish, offering a distinct culinary experience. Observing these preservation techniques provides valuable insight into the daily lives and ingenuity of the local population.
