What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Song Kol Lake for its breathtaking, untouched natural beauty and the unique opportunity to experience nomadic life in traditional yurts. The serene atmosphere, stunning mountain vistas, and the presence of free-roaming animals are major highlights. However, the challenging journey on rough roads and the potential for cold weather, even in summer, are frequently mentioned drawbacks.
"Beautiful untouched nature and crystal clear lake! This is a must visit if you’re in Kyrgyzstan. You can really get the feeling how nomads once used to live. There are a lot of tourist camps now days but they are spread around so it doesn’t feel too cramped. And there are still local herders with their live stock so you can see their way of living.
Getting to the lake is a tricky part. It’s a dirt road for 80km so it takes 2h more than what google says. Make sure you start early in the day so you don’t get caught in the dark like us. Make sure you start with the full tank because there are no gas stations and 4x4 is a must.
Since the lake is at 3000m we got a bit of altitude sickens with mild headache and insomnia. I’d recommend to stay at least 2 nights there, but you can easily spend more.
There are a pleanty of yurt camps, more popular should be booked in advance but smaller ones you can just show up and they’ll probably have a place for you. Prices vary depending if you want hot showers and western toilets.
Bring warm clothes since temperatures get very low even in summer, with nights reaching close to 0C."

"One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The energy at this lake is just on another level. Driving towards the lake gets you through beautiful mountain passes and the lake itself is very nice to swim in. Definitely also take your chance to go horse riding!"
