What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kapchagay Reservoir is a beloved summer escape for Almaty residents, praised for its beautiful beaches and relaxing atmosphere. However, many visitors are disappointed by the significant amount of litter, urging for greater environmental responsibility. Despite this, the reservoir's accessibility and natural beauty continue to draw crowds seeking a waterside retreat.
"Kapchagay Reservoir, also spelled Qapshaghay Bogeni Reservoir and sometimes referred to as Lake Kapchagay, is a major reservoir in Almaty Region in southeastern Kazakhstan, approximately 60 kilometres north of Almaty. The 140 kilometre long lake is formed by a dam on the Ili River which flows from the mountains in the east towards Lake Balkhash to the northwest. It is named after the town of Kapchagay, which is located on its western bank. During the summer months the lake attracts a number of tourists from Almaty, who frequent its beachy shores on the weekends.
The reservoir has had a major impact upon fish populations, especially given that commercial fishing operations have been practiced in the reservoir, fuelling the local economy. In 1975, 24 species of fish were recorded in Kapchagay Reservoir, but in 1980 this had fallen to 18, directly affecting the industry. However, between 1985 and 1991 as the river reached its current capacity, fish stocks in the lake stabilised and since 1980 there has been a marked growth in the fishing industry on the lake after its decline in the 1970s. The reservoir has also been responsible for rising groundwater levels which has made it impossible to grow crops on land adjacent to the lake in many parts. As a result, many agricultural villages in the area such as Akozek, Kerbulak and Chengildi are located several kilometres from the lake, rather than on its bank."

"The place is definitely beautiful, it gives peace and relaxation to a person after the bustle of the city, BUT, there is a lot of garbage, and people are to blame for this. I don’t understand how you can treat your native land with such disrespect, which we will leave to our children. Very disappointing.."

The Ili River's Impact
For visitors, understanding the reservoir's origins helps appreciate its scale and the natural forces at play. The Ili River's journey from the mountains to the reservoir and beyond is a key part of the region's geography. The reservoir's creation has reshaped the landscape, influencing where settlements can thrive and impacting the natural flow of water.
This duality of providing resources while altering the environment is a common theme with large water bodies. It's a reminder of the complex relationship between human development and nature.
Summer Beach Culture
However, a recurring theme in reviews is the issue of litter and garbage left behind by some visitors. This detracts from the natural beauty and is a point of concern for many who wish to preserve the area. Responsible tourism, including packing out all waste, is crucial for maintaining the reservoir's appeal.
Despite the challenges with cleanliness, the reservoir remains a beloved spot for its accessibility and the simple pleasure of a day by the water. It offers a vital escape for urban dwellers, embodying a casual, summer-focused leisure culture.
Winter's Serene Landscape
Winter visits are ideal for those seeking quiet contemplation and a break from the city's hustle without the summer crowds. The stark beauty of the reservoir in colder months provides a unique photographic opportunity. However, it's important to be prepared for colder weather and potentially less accessible areas due to snow.
This off-season charm makes Kapchagay Reservoir a year-round destination, appealing to different preferences. It highlights the reservoir's versatility beyond just a summer beach spot.
