"This flat castle was built by Maeda Toshitsune, the second lord of the Kaga domain with a million koku of rice, as his retirement home. It was a practical early modern castle with a moat fed by water drawn from the Kakehashi River. If it had been preserved in good condition, it would likely have been even more impressive than Kanazawa Castle. However, following the Meiji era's castle abolition order, the buildings were abandoned, the stone walls removed, and the moat filled in, making it difficult to imagine what the castle once looked like. The stone walls of the Gosankai Yagura (Three-story Tower), the only structure that escaped removal, are exceptionally impressive, and one cannot help but wish that at least the moat and stone walls around the Honmaru (Main Castle) had been preserved. While the remains of the Sannomaru (Nanbutsu) have been developed as Ashi Castle Park, the charm of a feudal lord's garden has been lost.
While it's not exactly worth the effort, it's within walking distance of Komatsu Station, making it a convenient stop-off point."
