A very long review but needs to be shared to commend the staff at Mahoroba no yu onsen for going above & beyond; truly exemplifying the Japanese spirit of omonetashi!

Mahoroba no yu Onsenまほろばの湯♨️

Because it was raining soo hard and with no car, we decided to head out to an onsen to spend the rainy afternoon at! It was also the only place open till 8:30pm (everything else closes at 5pm in this town). So we hopped onto the taxi and off we went!

The onsen was fantastic and truly relaxing but what we didn’t know awaited us was … NO TAXI in Zao after 6pm!!!

We were stranded at the onsen!! It was raining and cold at 5 deg AND walking back would take us 1.5h at least!!

The old Japanese gentleman at Reception tried calling everyone cos he was soo worried 心配 about us having to trek back in the cold rain BUT there was simply no car!

ONLY IN JAPAN >> As we were wrapping ourselves up as warmly as possible for the trek back in 5 deg rainy weather, a distinguished Japanese gentleman, Nagakubo-san (owner of the onsen & guesthouse) approached us.

After what would have been my very CMI broken Japanese conversation with him, he offered us a ride back home!! Called his employee to drive a van over to the onsen and got us back safe & sound!

So so grateful for Japanese hospitality & graciousness 🥰🥰"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

The easiest way is often by car. Public transport involves taking a train to Shiroishi Station and then a bus to Togatta Onsen. Be aware that bus services can be infrequent, especially on weekends and holidays. If you're relying on taxis, book them well in advance, as they can be hard to find, particularly after 6 PM. Some guesthouses offer pick-up services, which can be a lifesaver if you're stranded. Reddit

Yes, it can be challenging. While the main street is walkable, getting to and from some onsen or attractions might require a taxi or a longer walk. Public buses operate, but their schedules might not align with your plans. Planning your itinerary around available transport is key. Reddit

From Shiroishi Station, you can take a local bus that heads towards Togatta Onsen. The bus ride typically takes around 30-40 minutes. It's advisable to check the bus schedule in advance, as services can be limited. Reddit

Some guesthouses and larger onsen facilities may offer shuttle services for their guests. It's best to inquire directly with your accommodation or the onsen you plan to visit about any available transportation assistance. Reddit

This is a real concern, as taxis become very scarce after 6 PM. If you find yourself in this situation, especially during bad weather, your best bet is to seek help from the staff at the onsen or your guesthouse. They might be able to contact a local driver or offer assistance. Reddit

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

Entry fees vary by onsen, but generally range from ¥500 to ¥1,500 for day-use visitors. Some facilities offer different pricing for extended stays or access to additional amenities like relaxation rooms. It's always a good idea to check the specific onsen's website or inquire upon arrival. Reddit

For most day-use onsen, advance booking isn't strictly necessary, especially on weekdays. However, during peak seasons or weekends, it might be wise to book ahead to guarantee entry, particularly for popular establishments. Reddit

Opening hours vary significantly. Many onsen open around 10 AM or 11 AM and close between 5 PM and 8:30 PM. Some facilities are open later, but it's crucial to check the specific hours for each onsen you plan to visit, as many close early. Reddit

Discounts are not commonly advertised, but some accommodations might offer packages that include onsen access. Look out for local tourism promotions or inquire at your hotel. Reddit

This is a critical point: most onsen in Togatta Onsen, like many traditional Japanese hot springs, strictly prohibit entry for individuals with tattoos. This is due to historical associations with organized crime. If you have tattoos, you may need to find a private onsen or a facility with a more relaxed policy, though these are rare. Reddit

🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience

Most onsen provide essential amenities like lockers for your clothes and shoes, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. You can usually rent bath towels and hand towels for a small fee, or bring your own to save money. Many also have relaxation areas, vending machines, and restaurants. Reddit

Absolutely! Many onsen offer day-use passes that allow you to stay for several hours or even the entire day. This is a great way to fully immerse yourself in the relaxing atmosphere, take breaks in the lounge areas, and enjoy meals. Reddit

You will be provided with a locker to store your clothes. Inside the bathing area, you will be naked. Some onsen may offer small modesty towels for use within the bathing area, but these are not for drying. Reddit

While less common on the main street, some guesthouses or larger onsen complexes might have private onsen rooms (kashikiri buro) available for an additional fee. These are ideal for couples or families who prefer privacy. Inquire directly with the facility. Reddit

Before entering the baths, thoroughly wash and rinse your body at the provided washing stations. Do not wear swimwear in the bathing pools. Keep your small towel out of the water, and avoid splashing or being too loud. Reddit

🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining

Yes, surprisingly! While many Japanese meals are fish or meat-based, some onsen restaurants are accommodating. You can often request vegetarian versions of dishes like tempura, or enjoy simple meals of rice and miso soup. It's best to communicate your dietary needs clearly. Reddit

Onsen restaurants typically serve traditional Japanese cuisine, including soba noodles, udon, rice bowls (donburi), and set meals (teishoku). Some may also offer local specialties. The food is generally hearty and designed to complement a day of relaxation. Reddit

Generally, bringing outside food and drinks into the onsen bathing areas or main relaxation spaces is not permitted. However, some facilities might have designated areas where you can consume food purchased from outside, but it's best to confirm this beforehand. Reddit

Yes, Togatta Onsen Main Street has a few local restaurants and cafes. However, many of these also close relatively early, so if you plan to dine out late, check their operating hours. Reddit

A meal at an onsen restaurant can range from ¥1,000 to ¥2,500, depending on the dish. Set meals are often a good value. Vending machine drinks and snacks are usually more affordable. Reddit

📸 📸 Photography

Photography is generally prohibited inside the onsen bathing areas for privacy reasons. Some relaxation lounges or outdoor areas might permit photography, but it's always best to ask staff or look for signage indicating where photos are allowed. Reddit

The charming main street itself, with its traditional buildings and signage, offers great photo opportunities. The natural surroundings, especially if you venture slightly off the main street, can also be picturesque. Capture the atmosphere of the onsen town. Reddit

You can usually take photos of the exterior of the onsen buildings and the general streetscape. However, once you enter the changing rooms or bathing areas, all photography should cease. Respect the privacy of other bathers. Reddit

The primary restriction is no photography in any area where people are undressed or potentially exposed. This includes changing rooms and all bathing pools. Be mindful and respectful of local customs and privacy. Reddit

A versatile camera that handles low light well is ideal for capturing the atmospheric streets, especially in the evening. If you plan to explore the surrounding nature, a wider lens might be useful. However, keep gear minimal and easy to carry. Reddit

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Togatta Onsen can be a relaxing experience for families, but it requires careful consideration. The primary challenge is the strict tattoo policy at most onsen, which might exclude some family members. Additionally, the quiet and serene atmosphere of onsen might not always align with the energy of young children. Reddit

Look for onsen facilities that offer private bathing rooms (kashikiri buro) if you want to keep your family together and maintain privacy. Some larger onsen complexes might also have more spacious relaxation areas where children can unwind. When dining, inquire about kid-friendly options or simpler dishes like rice and noodles. Planning your transport in advance is also crucial, especially if you have strollers or need to manage nap times. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

To enjoy Togatta Onsen on a budget, focus on day-use onsen with reasonable entry fees and consider bringing your own towels to avoid rental costs. Many onsen offer excellent value for a full day of relaxation, allowing you to make the most of your entrance fee. Reddit

For meals, opt for simpler dishes like soba or udon noodles, or enjoy a basic meal of rice and miso soup. Vending machine snacks and drinks are also a more affordable option. If you're staying overnight, look for guesthouses that offer breakfast or have kitchen facilities. Planning your transportation carefully, perhaps by utilizing infrequent bus services or walking when possible, will also help save money. Reddit

💖 Couples

Togatta Onsen offers a wonderfully romantic escape for couples seeking relaxation and tranquility. The serene atmosphere of the hot springs provides the perfect setting for unwinding together. Consider booking a private onsen room (kashikiri buro) for an intimate and exclusive bathing experience. Reddit

Many onsen have comfortable relaxation lounges where you can spend quality time together after your soak, perhaps enjoying a quiet drink or a shared meal. The charming main street also provides opportunities for leisurely strolls, hand-in-hand, exploring local shops and enjoying the traditional ambiance. Reddit

The Art of Onsen Etiquette

Visiting an onsen is a quintessential Japanese experience, and understanding the etiquette is key to enjoying it fully. Before entering the bathing area, you must thoroughly wash and rinse your body at the designated washing stations. This ensures the communal baths remain clean. You'll typically find a small stool and a handheld showerhead for this purpose. Remember to rinse off all soap and shampoo before stepping into the hot spring pools. Reddit

Once clean, you can enter the onsen. You will be completely naked, as swimwear is not allowed in traditional onsen. A small modesty towel is usually provided, which you can use to cover yourself when walking around, but it should not be placed in the bathing water. Avoid splashing, loud conversations, and running. The goal is a serene and relaxing experience for everyone. Reddit

After your soak, rinse off again and dry yourself with your towel. Many onsen have relaxation areas where you can rest, enjoy a drink, or even have a meal. Be mindful of the tattoo policy, as most traditional onsen prohibit entry for individuals with visible tattoos due to historical reasons. Reddit

Navigating Togatta Onsen Without a Car

While Togatta Onsen is a charming destination, getting around without a car requires careful planning. Public transportation relies on buses, which can have infrequent schedules, especially on weekends and holidays. Taxis are available but can be scarce, particularly after 6 PM, leading to potential issues if you're not staying within walking distance of your last activity. Reddit

Many travelers recommend pre-booking taxis or arranging for pick-up services through your guesthouse or accommodation. This is especially crucial if you plan to stay out late or if the weather is poor, as walking long distances in the cold or rain can be unpleasant. Some onsen facilities, like Mahoroba no Yu, have been known to go above and beyond to help stranded guests, but it's best not to rely on such exceptional kindness. Reddit

Consider staying at a guesthouse located directly on or very near the main street if you prefer to walk. This minimizes your reliance on transportation and allows you to easily explore the local shops and restaurants. If you do plan to use taxis, have local numbers handy and book your return journey well in advance. Reddit

Culinary Delights and Dietary Needs

Togatta Onsen offers a taste of traditional Japanese cuisine, often served within the onsen facilities themselves. Expect hearty meals like soba and udon noodles, rice bowls, and set menus designed to be satisfying after a relaxing soak. While many dishes feature fish or meat, there's a growing awareness of dietary needs. Reddit

Vegetarian travelers have found success by communicating their needs clearly. Dishes like vegetable tempura, miso soup, and plain rice are often available or can be customized. Don't hesitate to ask the staff for vegetarian options; they are often willing to accommodate. Some onsen restaurants have even been praised for their willingness to create special vegetarian Japanese lunches. Reddit

Beyond the onsen, the main street has a few local eateries. However, like many smaller towns, dining options can be limited, and places tend to close early. It's wise to check the operating hours of any restaurant you plan to visit, especially if you're looking for a late dinner. Reddit
