Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Ponshukan's unique sake vending machines and extensive selection of over 100 Niigata sakes, calling it a must-do at Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The affordable tasting experience is a major draw, though some find the sheer number of choices overwhelming. It's a fun and convenient way to sample local brews.

"A sake(Japanese rice wine) tasting shop with over 110 sakes available from different local brewers of Niigata.

Niigata brewing is renowned for its non-sweeten and mild-dry taste that differs from the famous Harima and Kyoto brewing. Here the local sake are with different sweetness, dryness and even fruit aroma.

To begin with, buy some tokens at the entrance and you will get a small cup. Place your cup under the outlet of the sake slot you picked, then insert token (1-2 respectively) required and press the yellow button, the sake will be served.

Such a complete collection of local sake is rarely found in other places. It is recommended to start a research to screen out the Niigata sake that you may be interested first before tasting them here.

#56 Midorikawa would be my personal favourite that light drinkers from aboard can easily accept its mild yet elegant taste."

"I visited around 6pm on a Tuesday. The place seems to have a crowd all the time.
You pay at the front counter and get your coils to use to drink your sake. There's a huge range to select from and you can get more coins if you wish to."

Bhanuka Senerath

"Like everyone in the reviews are saying - definitely a must do when you arrive at the station! I found out about this place via google map reviews and honestly - despite not being a sake fan I enjoyed myself a little too much with the plum flavoured sake. Again - as mentioned, you need to line up and provide a 500 yen that will be broken down into tokens that you can insert to get a tester of the sake you choose. There’s so many and it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed but be like me and stick to the right hand side where the plum sakes are. You don’t be disappointed!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Niigata Sake

Niigata Prefecture is renowned as the 'Kingdom of Sake' in Japan, celebrated for its pure water sources and ideal climate for rice cultivation. The sake produced here is often characterized by its mild, dry, and clean taste, a departure from the sweeter profiles found in other regions. This distinctiveness makes Ponshukan a crucial stop for anyone interested in exploring the nuances of Japanese rice wine. Reddit

At Ponshukan, you'll find an unparalleled collection featuring over 100 different sakes from nearly 90 breweries across Niigata. This extensive selection allows visitors to embark on a personalized tasting journey, discovering the subtle differences in sweetness, dryness, and even fruity aromas that each brewery offers. It's an opportunity to appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into every bottle. Instagram+1

Beyond the tasting machines, the museum also offers a retail space where you can purchase your favorite sakes to take home. This allows you to extend the experience and share the taste of Niigata with friends and family. It’s a perfect way to bring a piece of Japan’s sake culture back with you. Instagram

Navigating the Tasting Experience

The core of the Ponshukan experience lies in its unique coin-operated vending machines. Upon purchasing your tasting cup and tokens (typically 500 yen for five tokens), you're free to explore the extensive rows of dispensers. Each machine offers a different sake, with labels often providing brief descriptions of its flavor profile. Instagram+1

To taste, simply place your cup beneath the desired dispenser, insert the required number of tokens (most sakes are one token, but premium options may require two or more), and press the button. The machine will then pour a small tasting portion directly into your cup. This interactive method makes sampling a variety of sakes both fun and efficient. Reddit

Visitors often recommend starting with the sakes on the right-hand side, especially if you're new to sake or prefer sweeter notes, as some plum-flavored options are located there. Don't hesitate to try a few different ones to discover your personal preferences. If you find a sake you particularly enjoy, remember you can purchase a full bottle from the adjacent shop.
