Embrace the High Altitude

Yokoteyama Ski Area sits at Japan's second-highest skiable elevation, offering incredible views but also demanding respect for the elements. Dress in layers and be prepared for potentially strong winds and cold temperatures, especially at the summit. Check lift status beforehand, as some may be closed depending on conditions.

Snowboarder Caution Advised

While beautiful, some of the green runs at Yokoteyama can be extremely flat, making them challenging for snowboarders who may find themselves walking. Stick to intermediate runs or be prepared for a less-than-ideal snowboarding experience on the easier slopes.

Replying to @John H126 Where to ski in Japan? Here three places based on my own personal experience ⛷️🌨️ They all have pros & cons but my personal favourite is still Nozawa Onsen!

Reviews Summary

Yokoteyama Ski Area is praised for its stunning high-altitude views and uncrowded slopes, making it a gem for intermediate skiers. While the summit experience and Sky Cafe are highlights, snowboarders should be wary of the very flat green runs. Some lifts may be unhooded and exposed to the elements.

"Very small skiresort with a couple of challenging runs. For snowboarders...dont get to the greens. Those are almost flat and you'll end up walking the whole slope. When you go up to the top it's amazing and you can really enjoy the view!"

Travel Kwokker

"Shame that some lifts weren't open - reduced the options considerably.
Poor visibility at the top especially on the Shibutoge side but that's not the resort's fault!
Fun intermediate runs and also nice to say you've skied the 2nd highest field in Japan."

Peter Launders

"Perfect resort for intermediate skiers, and because it’s off the beaten track, you will have the place to yourselves. We came for the Christmas holidays and didn’t queue once for the ski lifts! The powder was well groomed and even in the late afternoon you could find sections of the piste that had not been skied on from the night before - a dream! A great secret gem close to the “Snow Monkeys”. We enjoyed the restaurants and the fries chicken and wedges were a hit with the kids. The ramen and the borscht also looked amazing! We’ll be back!"

Yokoteyama Ski Area can be a good option for families, especially if you have intermediate skiers. The availability of kid-friendly food options like fries and chicken at the on-site restaurants is a definite plus. Reddit The lack of crowds means less stress navigating busy slopes with children. However, parents should be aware that the green runs can be very flat for snowboarding, which might frustrate younger riders. Ensure children are dressed warmly due to the high altitude and exposed lifts. Reddit

Navigating the Slopes: Terrain and Skill Levels

Yokoteyama Ski Area is renowned for its high elevation, making it one of Japan's second-highest skiable fields. The terrain is primarily geared towards intermediate skiers, offering well-groomed pistes and the potential for excellent powder, especially in the mornings. Reviewers often praise the lack of crowds, allowing for an enjoyable experience without long lift queues. Reddit

However, snowboarders should exercise caution, particularly on the green runs. These are frequently described as being extremely flat, to the point where walking might be necessary. While the upper slopes offer more challenging and steeper sections, the transition to the lower green runs can be problematic for those on a snowboard. Reddit

For those seeking a challenge, the top runs are slightly steep and icy, opening up to wider, flatter areas at the bottom. The resort's location, being somewhat isolated from the main Shiga Kogen area, means you'll likely have more of the mountain to yourself, a significant draw for those who prefer a quieter ski experience. Reddit

The Summit Experience: Views and Amenities

The absolute highlight of Yokoteyama Ski Area is its summit. Reaching the top offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Japanese Alps. On a clear day, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji can be spotted in the distance, providing a truly memorable photographic opportunity. InstagramReddit

Adding to the summit experience is the Sky Cafe, a mountaintop eatery that allows visitors to enjoy refreshments while taking in the breathtaking scenery. This unique amenity makes the ascent even more rewarding, offering a place to warm up and refuel with a view. Instagram

It's important to note that the lifts to the summit are unhooded chairlifts, meaning you'll be exposed to the elements during the ascent. This can be quite cold and windy, so proper layering and protection are essential for enjoying the journey to the top. Reddit

Beyond the Slopes: Dining and Atmosphere

While Yokoteyama is primarily a ski destination, the dining options add to its charm. The Sky Cafe at the summit is a standout, offering a unique experience with its unparalleled views. Instagram On the mountain, you can find hearty Japanese fare like ramen and borscht, with popular comfort food items such as fries, chicken, and wedges also available, which are noted as being a hit with children. Reddit

The overall atmosphere is described as a 'great secret gem', particularly for intermediate skiers who appreciate having the slopes largely to themselves. This lack of crowds contributes to a more relaxed and enjoyable skiing or snowboarding experience, a stark contrast to some of the busier Japanese resorts. Reddit

While the resort itself is focused on skiing, its proximity to the broader Shiga Kogen area means that other attractions, like the famous Snow Monkeys, are within reach for day trips, making Yokoteyama a potential base for exploring the region. Reddit
