Reviews Summary

Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen is praised for its clean facilities, variety of baths, and the potential for stunning Mt. Fuji views from its outdoor pools. Visitors appreciate the on-site dining options and the relaxing atmosphere, making it a good spot for post-hike recovery. However, a significant drawback is the strict, often unadvertised, no-tattoo policy, which has led to disappointment for some. A few reviews also mention unfriendly staff. Reddit

"One of the best onsen at the Mt Fuji area. For men’s bath, there are 3 pools indoor and 2 outdoor (can’t take photos). The indoor pools have a jacuzzi and a cold spring water, plus 2 sauna rooms. Wow. The outdoor pools have views of Mt Fuji (too bad, can’t see due to clouds). There are cafes to eat after the onsen and areas for massage chairs. It is a nice relaxation experience one need to do after a 11 hrs hike to Mt Fuji Summit."

Amos Kong

"INCREDIBLY Tattoos UNFRIENDLY. Not mentioned once on the website. Even covers won’t do. More Cameras in the lockers than in a bank. Baths are good but not sensational. Staff was unfriendly, it feels they are entitled for their success quite a lot to make you feel like a nobody. And that’s was also towards Natives."

Fred Segouin

"We had an amazing experience at the Onsen. The views of Mt. Fuji from the outdoor baths is unbeatable. The stone bath was really hot! It was the perfect way to warm up."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen can be a relaxing experience for families, but the strict no-tattoo policy is a major consideration. If no one in your family has tattoos, the variety of indoor pools, including a jacuzzi, can be enjoyable for children. The on-site cafe offers a convenient dining option. However, the focus is on quiet relaxation, so keeping younger children calm and supervised is essential. Reddit

It's crucial to check the onsen's policy regarding children's ages and any specific rules for family bathing. While the hot springs are therapeutic, ensure the water temperature is suitable for younger visitors. Bringing your own towels or factoring in rental costs is also important for family budgeting. Remember, photography is not allowed in bathing areas. Reddit

🚶 Solo Travelers

For solo travelers seeking a peaceful retreat, Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen offers a great opportunity for self-care and reflection. The multiple indoor and outdoor baths provide ample space to relax and unwind. The on-site cafe is perfect for a quiet meal, and the potential for Mt. Fuji views adds a unique element to the experience. Reddit

Be mindful of the strict no-tattoo policy, as this could be a deterrent. If you're comfortable with onsen etiquette and the potential for limited views of Mt. Fuji due to weather, a solo visit can be incredibly rejuvenating. It's a chance to disconnect and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the hot springs in a serene environment. Reddit

🧗 Hikers & Adventurers

Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen is an ideal destination for hikers and adventurers looking to soothe tired muscles after a trek, especially after climbing Mt. Fuji. The hot springs are perfect for recovery, offering a warm and relaxing environment to ease aches and pains. The variety of pools, including jacuzzis and saunas, can provide targeted relief. Reddit

Plan your visit to coincide with your hiking schedule. The on-site dining is convenient for refueling post-adventure. However, the tattoo policy is a critical factor; if you have tattoos, you'll need to find an alternative onsen. Otherwise, this is a prime spot to unwind and recharge after your outdoor exploits. In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Onsen Etiquette

Visiting an onsen is a quintessential Japanese experience, and understanding the etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit. Before entering the bathing area, you must thoroughly wash and rinse your body at the designated washing stations. This ensures the bathwater remains clean for everyone. After washing, you can enter the hot spring baths. It's customary to enter slowly and avoid splashing. Towels should not be submerged in the water; they are typically placed on your head or beside the bath. Remember that most public onsen, including Benifuji-no-Yu, have a strict no-tattoo policy, which is crucial to be aware of. Reddit

When it comes to hygiene, it's important to note that nudity is standard in Japanese onsen. You'll typically find separate bathing areas for men and women. Lockers are provided for your belongings, and it's advisable to bring a small towel for washing and a larger one for drying off afterward, or rent them if needed. Some onsen may offer additional amenities like saunas, jacuzzis, and cold plunge pools, allowing for a varied and complete relaxation experience. Reddit

Respecting the quiet atmosphere is also part of onsen etiquette. While some chatter is natural, loud conversations or disruptive behavior are generally frowned upon. The goal is a peaceful and therapeutic soak. If you're unsure about any aspect of the etiquette, observe others or discreetly ask staff for guidance. This mindful approach ensures a pleasant experience for yourself and fellow bathers. Reddit

The Allure of Mt. Fuji Views

One of the primary draws of Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen is its potential for stunning views of the majestic Mt. Fuji. Imagine soaking in a warm, mineral-rich outdoor bath while gazing at Japan's most iconic peak. This combination of natural hot springs and a breathtaking natural wonder creates an unparalleled sense of tranquility and awe. The experience is particularly magical on clear days, offering postcard-perfect vistas that are deeply restorative. Reddit

However, it's essential to manage expectations regarding these views. Mt. Fuji is notoriously shy, often shrouded in clouds, especially during certain seasons or times of day. Visitors have reported cloudy days where the mountain was completely hidden, turning the experience into a relaxing soak without the iconic backdrop. Therefore, while the possibility of seeing Mt. Fuji enhances the appeal, the quality of the onsen itself and the relaxation it provides are consistent, regardless of the weather. Reddit

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of Fuji-san, checking the weather forecast and visiting during seasons known for clearer skies (like autumn and winter) might increase your chances. Even if the mountain remains hidden, the therapeutic benefits of the hot springs and the overall serene environment at Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen make it a worthwhile visit for relaxation and rejuvenation. Reddit

Navigating the Tattoo Policy

A significant point of contention and a crucial piece of information for many potential visitors is Benifuji-no-Yu Onsen's strict no-tattoo policy. This policy is often not prominently displayed on their website or promotional materials, leading to disappointment and frustration for those with visible tattoos. Reviews frequently highlight this issue, with some visitors being turned away even when attempting to cover their tattoos. Reddit

It's important to understand that this policy is common in many traditional Japanese onsen, stemming from historical associations of tattoos with organized crime (yakuza). While attitudes are slowly changing in some areas, many establishments maintain this rule to cater to a broader range of clientele and avoid potential discomfort. At Benifuji-no-Yu, the policy appears to be strictly enforced, with no exceptions made even for small or decorative tattoos. Reddit

For travelers with tattoos, it is highly recommended to contact the onsen directly before your visit to confirm their current policy and understand the implications. If you are unable to visit due to this policy, exploring other onsen in the Fuji Five Lakes region that may be more tattoo-friendly could be an alternative. Always prioritize checking these details to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Reddit
