The landscape from Princess Mononoke exists IRL and it’s unlike any forrest I’ve ever seen. Yakushima is a small remote island on the southern tip of Japan and back in May I visited for 4 days to hike the legendary Mt Miyanoura. The full adventure is out now on my youtube channel. #Hiking #japanhiking #hikingjapan #yakushimahiking #yakushima

#walkwithme as I traced the long old railway tracks of #jomonsugitrail to meet my wonderful husband at #wilsonstump who was coming from Mt Miyanoura traversing around 16km in 6hrs, before we we hiked out together, on our 7th wedding anniversary ♥️ He did a total of 26km (30km on his watch) in a day hike with crazy elevation gains. "Very cool, enormous stump of what must of been a massive tree.

The only problem is there is a set number of busses to the trail so all the tourists hiking arrive at about the same time. So prepare to walk as fast as possible to blow past everyone else if you want to arrive to take pictures without anyone else around."

The Mystical Forests of Yakushima

Yakushima is renowned for its ancient cedar forests, some of the oldest in Japan. The island's high rainfall contributes to its lush, moss-covered landscape, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. This unique environment is what inspired Hayao Miyazaki's animated masterpiece, 'Princess Mononoke,' and many visitors come seeking that same magical feeling. TikTok+1

Key to this ecosystem are the Yakusugi, or Yakushima cedars, some of which are estimated to be over a thousand years old, with the most famous being Jomon Sugi. Hiking through these forests feels like stepping back in time, with towering trees, vibrant green mosses, and the sound of flowing streams. The Wilson Stump is a prime example of these ancient giants, offering a unique perspective from within its hollowed-out form. Instagram

When exploring, remember that these forests are a delicate ecosystem. Stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing the flora and fauna, and pack out everything you pack in. The experience is about immersion and respect for nature's grandeur. TikTok

Hiking the Jomon Sugi Trail

The hike to Jomon Sugi is one of Yakushima's most iconic treks, and it's here you'll find the impressive Wilson Stump. This trail is a journey through the heart of the island's ancient cedar forest. It's a moderately challenging hike, often involving several hours of walking over uneven terrain, including wooden boardwalks, muddy paths, and sometimes even streams to cross. Instagram

Many visitors report that the trail can get quite crowded, especially during peak seasons. To make the most of your experience and get those coveted photos without a throng of people, starting your hike very early in the morning is highly recommended. This allows you to enjoy the tranquility of the forest and potentially have spots like the Wilson Stump to yourself for a brief period. Reddit

Be prepared for all types of weather, as Yakushima is known for its frequent rainfall. Waterproof hiking gear and sturdy, comfortable shoes are essential. The journey is as much about the destination as it is about the immersive experience of walking through such an ancient and vibrant natural landscape. TikTok
