"A lovely historical castle with a small but interesting museum inside. The view from the top is stunning—perfect for photos of Wakayama!"

"Visited on a weekday early afternoon around 2pm to see the castle the trail markers were very clear and you were able to get to the zoo a short walk away from the castle. You need to get tickets to see inside the castle or you can walk around outside for free. There is also a cafe/gift shop beside the castle for you to get ice cream and souvenirs which we enjoyed!
We visited the zoo after and since it was so hot that day the animals were either in their shelters or in the shade. We still got to see quite a few of them though. However I'm not sure how much they enjoy living there because many cages only had one animal with no others of it's kind to interact much with 😔"

"The castle is wonderful, but the next attraction is really disappointing.
The zoo is absolutely terrible — the animals are kept on bare ground, without even a patch of grass. The size of their enclosures — which can hardly be called anything other than prisons — is completely unsuitable for their needs.
It’s heartbreaking to see living creatures treated this way in our time.
What’s even worse is that schools bring children here, as if it were a form of entertainment."

Wakayama Castle: A Historical Gem
Beyond the keep, the castle grounds feature beautiful Japanese gardens, including a traditional tea house. Visitors can wander through these serene spaces, enjoying the meticulously maintained flora. The castle is also known for its free-roaming peacocks, which add a touch of natural beauty and surprise to the historical setting.
While the castle itself is a significant attraction, it's important to note that the zoo is a separate, smaller entity located within the broader castle park area. Many visitors combine the two, appreciating the historical significance of the castle before a brief visit to the zoo.
The Wakayama Park Zoo Experience
However, it's crucial to manage expectations regarding the zoo's facilities. Several reviews point out that the enclosures are largely concrete and may lack natural elements, leading to concerns about animal welfare. Some visitors have noted that animals might be kept alone in their enclosures, with limited opportunities for social interaction.
Despite these criticisms, the zoo does offer opportunities to see animals like Japanese macaques and Asian black bears. For those who appreciate seeing animals in a more naturalistic setting, this zoo might be less appealing. It's best viewed as a supplementary attraction to the main draw, Wakayama Castle, rather than a standalone destination.
