Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Oita Prefectural Museum of History to be an interesting and informative experience, particularly for its focus on northern Kyushu's religious history. The museum is praised for its beautiful layout, good English signage, and impressive replicas of historical structures like the Fukiji Temple Main Hall. While some noted a lack of English-speaking staff, the overall sentiment is one of satisfaction and value for the admission fee.

"Really interesting museum on northern Kyushu’s history. Beautiful layout. The permanent exhibition as of July 2023 is focused on the religious history of the area from the Stone Age to about the 19th century. Lots of great information on Buddhist and Shinto practice in the area, with a focus on the spread of Buddhism and historical worship.

English signage for the majority of the museum either posted on walls or in the free guide. Most of the translations are very good. Staff is very helpful, but don’t expect English speakers.

There are two projection presentations done at certain times while in the museum, check the schedule in the entrance hall for the one on the main Buddha statue. There is also a small library under the observation lobby.

We were the only ones there when we went on Saturday afternoon. You can’t get there by public transit, but the taxi from Usa Jingu was ¥770."

"Informative museum"

"It was well worth seeing and I was very satisfied.

Admission is 310 yen for adults, 160 yen for high school and university students, and free for elementary and junior high school students. (We recommend checking the website in advance for detailed admission fees.)

The first thing you'll see when you enter the museum is the "Dainichi Nyorai Statue." It's hard to tell from the photo, but the actual statue is quite large and impressive.

Going further in, you'll find a variety of exhibits organized by theme. There were many exhibits, and they were quite impressive. Please note that photography is prohibited within some exhibits.

The museum also has an exhibition lobby, a library, and a coloring area, making it a well-equipped museum.

It's definitely worth the admission fee. I highly recommend visiting."
