What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Shirakumo-no-ike for its serene, natural setting and the incredible stargazing opportunities. Its prime location within walking distance of Unzen Onsen and restaurants is a major draw, offering a perfect blend of camping and relaxation. Some find the camping fees a bit high, and the seasonal operation limits access during peak autumn beauty.
"We stayed for one night in late April. There were only a few guests so we could park outside the reception building. There is a larger car park closer to the road.
Two zones for pitching tents- 'Central' and 'Free'. Central is flat and a little more expensive. We pitched our tent in the more wild and hilly 'Free' area. But there are many flat-enough areas for even large tents. Trolleys are provided to haul your kit to your pitch.
There are a few lights at night dotted about, but they don't hinder the view of the incredible stars that are visible on a clear night.
As other reviewers mentioned, it's an easy walk to onsens and restaurants, but note the opening hours.
Very pleasant."

"Great campground within walking distance of Unzen!
This campground is large and there are many places where a tent can be set up, so it's easy to have privacy.
There are two decent bathrooms, and there is water that is drinkable.
I stayed here in the middle of August, and it was warm in the evening and pleasantly cool in the morning.
The BEST thing about this campground is that it's within walking distance of one of Kyushu's most famous onsen towns: Unzen. You can walk to an onsen and you can walk to one of the restaurants in town. Camping, hot springs, and food and drink - it doesn't get better than that.
I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT WE HAD THIS PLACE TO OURSELVES ON A FRIDAY."
Chris
"Campsite was closed in November, entrance chained shut at lower car park. You can still walk up to camp, but not staffed. Still used by mountain runners and hikers as it is entrance to some routes. Does not smell like Unzen Hell!"
