I visited Shinano Kokubunji Temple in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. At Shinano Kokubunji Temple in Ueda City, which was built during the Nara period, we go to the Gokaicho, which is held once every 12 years, and touch the Kaicho pillar connected to the Yakushi Nyorai statue, the principal image of the temple, to pray for good health!

"Ok"

"I wanted to see lotus flowers, so I decided to take the train from Terashita Station to Shinano Kokubunji Station via Ueda Station early in the morning on the first Sunday in July, and then walked from the station. There is a "Niomon" gate along National Route 18. Once you pass through the gate, the approach to the temple grounds extends through a residential area♪

During the Tenpyo period, "Kokubunji" and "Kokubun Nunnery" were built all over Japan by imperial decree. They were built at important bases in each country, and in Shinano Province, it was built in "present-day Ueda City". The buildings were later demolished and the site is now an archaeological park. The main hall of the current Shinano Kokubunji was rebuilt at the end of the Edo period!

Behind the hall is a large "lotus pond," and on the day I visited, "lotus flowers" could be seen everywhere. It was a Sunday, but since it was still early, there were few visitors, so I was able to take as many photos of lotus flowers as I wanted‼ ️"

"Visiting on August 8, 2025
Planning to see the lotus behind Kokubunji Temple
Driving along the route indicated on Google Maps on my phone, I ended up at a dead end.
I could certainly see the lotus flowers beyond the fence. While it might be possible to reach them on foot, it was impossible to reach by car, so I backed out and drove on National Route 18 toward Komoro City.
There was a building that looked like a temple gate along the national highway, so I turned left immediately after passing the building. After walking 100 meters up the hill, I found a parking lot (capacity for about 20 cars) on the right.
I was told that there were other parking lots for visitors.
After purifying myself with the water basin, I entered the main hall. Since it was a weekday, there were only two or three visitors. There's a lotus pond behind the main hall, so I walked around it. The lotus sign was on the right side of the main hall, so it was easy to find. The lotus pond is about the size of two tennis courts, and there's a boardwalk, making it easy to walk along. Since it was afternoon, there weren't many lotus flowers in bloom, but watching the leaves swaying in the breeze was soothing. There are well-maintained restrooms for visitors within the temple grounds. The bell tower, three-story pagoda, and other architectural structures are also magnificent, making this a must-see for anyone visiting Ueda City."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Historical Significance of Kokubunji

Shinano Kokubun-ji Temple is a remnant of a nationwide network of temples established during the Nara period (710-794 AD) by Emperor Shomu's decree. These Kokubunji temples were intended to spread Buddhism and strengthen imperial authority throughout Japan. Each province was mandated to build a Kokubunji (monastery) and a Kokubun-niji (nunnery). The original structures at Shinano Kokubun-ji were later demolished, and the current main hall was rebuilt at the end of the Edo period.Reddit The site is now an archaeological park, preserving the historical layout.

The temple's three-story pagoda is noted as the oldest existing pagoda among Japanese Kokubunji temples, making it a significant architectural and historical artifact.TikTok Visiting Shinano Kokubun-ji offers a tangible connection to Japan's ancient Buddhist history and the imperial efforts to unify the nation through religion.

Experiencing the Yakushi Nyorai Unveiling

One of the most compelling reasons to visit Shinano Kokubun-ji Temple is the Gokaicho, a rare event held only once every 12 years, during which the temple's principal image, Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), is unveiled.Reddit This unveiling allows devotees and visitors to see the statue up close and pray for health and well-being. The next Gokaicho is anticipated in 2025, making it a significant pilgrimage opportunity for those interested in Buddhist art and devotion.

What makes this event particularly special is that photography of the principal image is often permitted, a rarity in many Japanese temples.Reddit This offers a unique chance to capture a sacred image and share its beauty. The extended interval between unveilings—12 years compared to Zenkoji Temple's 6 years—underscores the profound significance and anticipation surrounding this event. It's a deeply moving experience that connects visitors to centuries of faith and tradition.

Seasonal Beauty: Lotus and Wisteria

Beyond its historical and religious significance, Shinano Kokubun-ji Temple offers natural beauty throughout the year. The lotus pond located behind the main hall is a particular highlight, especially in early July. Visitors describe the sight of lotus flowers blooming everywhere as serene and soothing, with the leaves swaying gently in the breeze.Reddit Early morning visits are recommended to fully appreciate the tranquility and capture stunning photographs before the crowds arrive.

In the spring, the temple grounds can be transformed by the delicate beauty of wisteria flowers.Instagram While perhaps less famous than other wisteria viewing spots, Shinano Kokubun-ji provides a more intimate and peaceful setting to enjoy these cascading blooms. The combination of historical architecture, spiritual practices, and seasonal natural displays makes the temple a multifaceted destination.
