This Shonai shrine was built on the site where Tsurugaoka castle was built for warrier Sakai family in Edo era. The family was a feudal lord of Shonai clan. I visited in mid September 2025. There are many must-see spots around the shrine.( refer the latter half part of this reel) #神社巡り #寺社仏閣 ...

While small, its historical context and occasional cultural events make it a worthwhile visit.

"Nothing bad. It’s a nice small shrine with a long history. This was part of Tsuruoka castle. That’s probably why there’s a treasure room where you can see Samurai’s equipments. The armor, Katana, bows and arrows are worth a look."

Hilo I

"Serene place where you can pray and participate in many festivals. Their bunny fortune of the year is cute. I couldn't help but buy one. They also have other activities aside from religious one such as yoga, matcha ad wagashi tasting, making hinagashi, hina dolls exhibitions, etc, which you can check on their social media. The priest and shrine maidens are friendly to everyone, including foreigners. They have a small water basin that they fill with flowers of many type, and they change it accordingly. It's my favorite part of the shrine."

Caroline J.

"This shrine is located in the center of Tsuruoka. It is small, but has many visitors and is worshipped by many people. Various flowers are painted on the ceiling of the main hall, so it is worth paying attention to this when praying."
