Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by John Manjiro's extraordinary life story, highlighting his resilience and pivotal role in opening Japan. The museum's accessibility for English speakers and the 'yummy' cafe are frequently praised, though careful planning for infrequent bus services is advised.

"I came to know John Manjiro from my host family in Tokyo some years ago. At that time, my Japanese language ability was extremely limited, so they gave me a bilingual book of the life and adventure of John Mung. It piqued me an interest to visit Tosa Shimizu someday if I had a chance, which actually did happen.

Note that the museum's location doesn't exactly where John Mung was from - his hometown of Nakahama village is several kilometer east of Shimizu town. Basically at the other opposite of the town. There is a bus (heading for Sukumo) from downtown Shimizu, but the frequency left a lot to be desired, so beware of the timetable.

I didn't realize how eventful his life really was. Even at the time of his childhood, he wandered ~90 km from Tosa Shimizu to Usa Port at the outskirt of present-day city of Kochi to escape from his hometown. Not to mention him being stranded in an inhabited island afterwards, and the rest is history. It's very interesting to see the dynamics and changes during the transition of feudal Tokugawa and early-industrialization Meiji periods through his life.

There is also a cafe and souvenir shop at the first floor that opens at lunch time, but it was closed by the time of my visit. Thus I didn't have a chance to try its menu, because I had to be back at my accommodation to catch bus and train back to Kochi city."

"The museum went through extensive renovations and reopened in spring 2018. I thought the exhibits were very good and appreciated that a lot of work went into making it good for English speakers. It’s amazing how small coincidences like ship wrecks and being saved from a remote island can greatly influence the course of world history."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Extraordinary Life of John Manjiro

John Manjiro, born in 1827 in Nakahama village, Tosa Shimizu, lived a life far more adventurous than most. As a teenager, he was shipwrecked and spent months surviving on a deserted island. His resilience and resourcefulness were remarkable, as he managed to subsist on albatross chicks and other scarce resources. This harrowing experience set the stage for an even more extraordinary turn of events. Reddit

His rescue by an American whaler, Captain William Whitfield, led him to the United States. In Massachusetts, Manjiro learned English, literacy, and whaling skills. He even participated in the Gold Rush. This period of his life is a testament to his adaptability and thirst for knowledge, bridging two vastly different cultures during a time of significant global change. Reddit

Upon his return to Japan, which was then in a xenophobic, isolationist period under the Tokugawa Shogunate, Manjiro faced suspicion and imprisonment. However, his unique experiences and knowledge of the West eventually made him invaluable. He became an advisor to the Shogunate and later the Meiji government, playing a crucial role in opening Japan to international trade and modernization. His story is a powerful narrative of survival, cultural exchange, and historical impact. Reddit

Navigating Tosashimizu and Transportation

Visiting the John Manjiro Museum requires some logistical planning, particularly concerning transportation. While the museum is a significant attraction, it's important to note that it's not located in John Manjiro's exact birthplace of Nakahama village. His hometown is situated several kilometers east of Shimizu town. Reddit

The primary mode of public transport from downtown Shimizu to areas like the museum or Nakahama village is by bus, specifically those heading towards Sukumo. However, travelers have noted that the frequency of these bus services leaves much to be desired. This means that meticulously checking the bus timetable before embarking on your journey is not just a suggestion, but a necessity. Missing a bus can lead to significant delays or even disrupt your entire day's plan, especially if you need to catch a train back to a larger city like Kochi. Reddit

Therefore, when planning your visit, allocate ample time for travel. Consider the bus schedule when deciding on your departure time from Shimizu and your return journey. This foresight will ensure a more relaxed and enjoyable experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the museum and its surroundings without the stress of tight schedules. Reddit

The John Manjiro Museum underwent a significant renovation, reopening in the spring of 2018. This modernization has greatly enhanced the visitor experience, particularly for international travelers. A key aspect of the renovation was the effort to make the exhibits accessible to non-Japanese speakers. Reddit

Many of the displays and informational materials are now available in English, ensuring that the compelling story of John Manjiro's life and adventures can be fully understood and appreciated by a global audience. This attention to detail makes the museum a worthwhile destination for anyone interested in Japanese history, maritime exploration, or tales of incredible human resilience. Reddit

Beyond the exhibits, the museum also features a cafe and souvenir shop on its first floor. The cafe is noted for being 'very yummy' and opens at lunchtime, providing a pleasant spot to refuel and reflect on the museum's content.
