Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Awajurobe Yashiki for its authentic and engaging traditional puppet performances and informative museum. Many highlight the affordability and the welcoming staff who often provide English explanations, making it a highly recommended cultural experience in Tokushima. Some suggest arriving early to fully appreciate the museum and introductory film.

"Very very nice puppet-theatre. Short 30 minute version of a classic traditional play. Air-conditioned theatre, nice museum and shop. Some of the staff speak excellent English."

"Wonderful theatre and tiny museum where you can see a 30 minute performance of Tokushima-style ningyo-joruri bunraku puppetry and learn about its specific importance to the region. The theatre itself is apparently located in a historically significant site relevant to the play usually performed. This was a highlight of my visit to Tokushima and I wanted to leave some notes to encourage others to get the most out of it.

TIMES: they advertise performance times (check the website), but seem to expect visitors to mostly arrive by bus ~30 minutes in advance and have a procedure down pat to see a 10-minute short film and get a short tour of the one-room museum before the show. (Thanks again to the lovely gentleman who also provided explanations in English.) Don't come at 10:55 for an 11:00 show!

TRANSPORT: there is a bus right from Tokushima Station. I walked instead, which is possible but not terribly nice. Google Maps gave some impossible/unsafe directions around the bridge I took so it was longer than expected. I like slow travel so I don't regret it but would not suggest even to dedicated walkers.

WHILE YOU'RE IN THE AREA: just around the corner is the Awa Deko Ningyo Kaikan, which houses a much larger museum/collection of puppets and has its own mini-theatre where you get a lecture/demonstration by a puppet craftsman. This is an incredible addition to seeing a performance, not least because he demonstrates all of the flashier mechanisms (like the puppets whose heads get sliced in half by swords). Do both!"

"Amazing experience. Definitely a must see if you are in Tokushima. The museum and theatre both offer English explanations and subtitles for the play. We learned so much about the local culture surrounding puppets and theatre. The play itself was very dramatic. We got to see it with a live narration and Shamisen player. It was so cool to see this piece of unique culture."

The Art of Ningyo-Joruri in Tokushima

Awajurobe Yashiki is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Tokushima-style Ningyo-Joruri Bunraku. This traditional puppet theatre is a significant cultural heritage of the region. This requires immense coordination and artistry, bringing the characters to life with remarkable fluidity and expression. The performances, though short, are packed with drama and emotion, often accompanied by live narration and the evocative sounds of the shamisen. Reddit

Visitors can gain a deeper appreciation for this art form through the venue's museum.
