What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking alpine scenery, often comparing it to Switzerland. The unique multi-transportation journey along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a highlight, offering diverse natural beauty from ancient forests to the impressive Kurobe Dam. Some find the trails challenging and advise caution and preparation for wildlife.
"One of Japan's three great valleys, known as Shimono Corridor, it's a long, 7-hour journey to Asobara Onsen Lodge. It's thrilling, but the autumn foliage is beautiful, making it a hidden gem worth walking through at least once. If you're up to the challenge, give it a try."
木下勇(powdercats)
"To see Kurobe Dam from below, head to the bridge downstream from Kurobe Dam Station towards the climber's exit (former Nichiden trail, Uchinosuke Valley, Shimono Corridor) and you'll find a hiking trail that continues down below. Although the distance is short, the difference in elevation is about 200m round trip, so it's quite tiring. During Golden Week, there is still snow on the trail, so it's a good idea to bring proper shoes and poles. The top of the dam is crowded with tourists, but the bottom is in the middle of nature, so don't forget to bring bear protection equipment."

"After getting off the bus at Kurobe Dam Station, turn towards the dam and keep going straight.
Just that alone will give you a great atmosphere! Of course, you must prepare bear protection. If you go down to the river at this point, you don't need to prepare for a full-scale mountain climb, but the way back is really tough! You'll be panting from the whole climb.
However, it's rare to see Kurobe Dam from below, so you should keep this in mind!"

The forest floor is often carpeted with lush vegetation, and the sheer scale of the trees is awe-inspiring.
For those seeking a more adventurous experience, trails leading from Bijodaira can take you deeper into the alpine wilderness. However, it's crucial to be prepared for varying terrain and potential wildlife encounters.
