What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Karikachi Pass for its breathtaking views of the Tokachi Plain on clear days, calling it a scenic highlight of Hokkaido. The historical significance and the unique town border signs are also appreciated. However, the experience is highly weather-dependent, with fog often obscuring the views, and some former amenities are no longer operational.
"Great view in clear weather"
Budhaditya Pyne
"November 2025. The pass's summit is 644m high, and it's often foggy. It's a national highway connecting Tokachi and Furano, and before the opening of the Doto Expressway, the teahouse (souvenir shop) at the pass was also a popular tourist spot. Despite the increasing demand from inbound tourists, the traffic flow seems to be changing."
揚北衆
"This pass in Shinnai, Shintoku Town is the border between Kamikawa and Tokachi districts.
Under the Ritsuryo system of the Meiji period, the area that is now Ishikari District, as well as the combined areas of Sorachi and Kamikawa Districts, became Ishikari Province, and so it was named Karikachi Pass as it was the border between the former Ishikari Province and the former Tokachi Province.
On clear days, the scenery is beautiful and you can see the Tokachi Plain. On the other hand, if the weather is bad, thick fog will form and visibility will be obstructed to the point where you cannot see anything ahead, so please be very careful when driving. Make sure to turn on your headlights."

Navigating Karikachi Pass: Driving and Safety
When crossing the road from the parking lot to the observation deck, pay close attention to traffic. The presence of town border signs offers a unique photo opportunity, but the primary draw is the breathtaking vista. The historical context of the pass, once a significant border and railway line, adds another layer to the experience, reminding visitors of Hokkaido's development.
While some facilities like the drive-in have closed, the observation deck remains a key feature. It provides a sheltered space to admire the Tokachi Plain, and you might find local pamphlets or even small shops selling souvenirs with a nostalgic charm. Remember to dress in layers, as the weather can be surprisingly cold and windy even during warmer months.
The Scenic Beauty of the Tokachi Plain
The plain's vastness is best appreciated during the golden hours of sunrise or sunset, when the light casts a warm glow over the fields. However, visitors should be prepared for variable weather. While clear skies offer unparalleled vistas, fog can descend quickly, dramatically reducing visibility and transforming the landscape into an ethereal, misty scene. This unpredictability is part of the pass's charm but also necessitates caution.
Even with some former amenities closed, the observation deck offers a comfortable vantage point to soak in the scenery. The contrast between the mountainous terrain of the pass and the flat, fertile plain below is striking. It’s a place that invites quiet contemplation and appreciation for Hokkaido's natural grandeur.
