"Easily one of the most enjoyable hiking trails I've walked in Japan. Everywhere I looked was beautiful every step of the way, and despite there being a decent number of other people there, it was quite peaceful and calm. You'll be surrounded by greenery, beautiful stone formations, and crystal clear waters running alongside you for much of the way. There are several spots where the stream is just deep enough to swim a little or relax in the water, which is on the chilly side this time of year (we went on the last day of August).
If you have a deep fear of heights, there will be some parts that you won't be comfortable with, but you can also avoid those portions of the trail. The parking area was pretty full when we went, but it was a weekend, so that's expected. There's a public restroom near the entrance of the trail, and there's a nice spot to swim right at the beginning of the trail, as well. We did the hike first and enjoyed cooling off in the water on the way back."
