The Samurai Restaurant in Shinjuku, Tokyo is such a wild and fun experience. It originally opened years ago as the famous Robot Restaurant, with millions spent on lights, sets, and over-the-top performances. Now rebranded, it’s kept that same electric energy but with a samurai twist and honestly, I loved it. Sure, it’s not traditional, but it gives exactly the kind of vibe you look for as a touris...

This was honestly the most bizarre show I've ever witnessed but because it was so bizarre it was pretty cool The Robot Restaurant was one of Tokyo’s most popular tourist attractions, a show that combined robots, dragons, ninjas, blue-haired dancers, drums, a whole lot of neon lights, and really loud music. Seriously....it was really bizarre It closed in 2020 due to covid and had planned to reopen...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently describe the Samurai Restaurant (formerly Robot Restaurant) as an incredibly unique, dazzling, and bizarre experience unlike anything else. While the food is secondary, the high-energy performances, vibrant lights, and sheer spectacle make it a memorable highlight for many, despite its tourist-heavy nature and high price point.

"Simply.. Amazing!! This place was unlike anything I've ever experienced in my 3 years of touring Japan. The performance was absolutely incredible to watch and the intimate setting makes you feel like a VIP! The food and drink options that come with your ticket purchase were great and they even have an "a la carte" menu if you just want snacks while you watch the performance, but be sure to bring yen as any purchases made during your visit is CASH ONLY. All the staff and performers were incredible and went above and beyond to ensure that you have the most enjoyable experience possible. Make sure you put this place on your bucket list. You'll be dazzled and amazed by your experience here!"

Josh Franck

"Sure it's packed with overseas tourists, ridiculous and absolutely stupid, but far our, it's awesome fun! The colours, the lights, the silliness... I don't know, I'm just here for it. Food and drinks are reasonable and available from vendors in between segments. It gets crowded, but honestly it's all part of the fun!"

The Girl Who Flies

"Okay, strsight up. I had absolutely NO ideas what went on inside the restaurant and what the show was about. And everyone I've asked who has been to the robot show is equally clueless. But it's strangely nice how we all share this common experience of absolute cluelessness. Didn't try the food there and was basically dragged to the show by a friend. Tickets are pretty pricy too and the whole thing felt like some whimsical fantasy of randomness. I'd still say it's an experience and give the place 5 stars although I'm not sure why. But at least I came out of it with positive emotions!

Everyone who's been and is clueless about your experience please comment below!! Maybe we can start a chain and see how far it goes."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Evolution from Robot to Samurai

The venue, originally famous as the Robot Restaurant, was a groundbreaking Tokyo attraction that captivated visitors with its sheer absurdity and technological spectacle. Anthony Bourdain famously called it the 'greatest show he has ever seen.' TikTok It was a whirlwind of lasers, robots, dancers, and a narrative that was as wild as it was nonsensical. Millions were invested in its elaborate sets and over-the-top performances, creating an immersive, almost overwhelming, experience. TikTok

However, the world evolves, and so did this Shinjuku icon. Rebranded as the Samurai Restaurant, it has retained that electric energy and commitment to spectacle. While the 'robot' element might be less prominent, the core of the experience—the dazzling lights, the pulsating music, and the high-octane performances—remains. The new theme often incorporates samurai warriors and traditional Japanese elements, offering a fresh yet familiar take on the original concept. TikTok This evolution ensures that the venue continues to be a must-visit for those seeking a truly unique and unforgettable Tokyo night out.

Many visitors note that while the name has changed, the spirit of the show endures. It's still a place where you can expect the unexpected, a vibrant explosion of entertainment that defines the eclectic charm of Shinjuku. Whether you remember the original Robot Restaurant or are new to its magic, the Samurai Restaurant promises an experience that is both nostalgic and thrillingly new. TikTok+1

Navigating the Shinjuku Spectacle

The Samurai Restaurant is situated in the bustling heart of Shinjuku, a district renowned for its vibrant nightlife and entertainment. Its location makes it incredibly accessible via Tokyo's efficient public transportation system. Most visitors arrive via Shinjuku Station, a major hub that connects numerous JR and subway lines. From the station, it's a relatively short walk to the venue, often through lively streets filled with neon signs and bustling crowds, adding to the overall immersive experience. TikTok+1

Upon arrival, guests are typically ushered into a waiting area before the main show begins. This pre-show space often contributes to the overall atmosphere, building anticipation for the main event. While the original Robot Restaurant was known for its labyrinthine layout, the current setup aims to provide a clear path to the performance area. However, some past reviews have mentioned the venue feeling a bit claustrophobic, so it's worth being prepared for a potentially dense environment. Reddit

For those looking to enhance their visit, consider arriving a bit earlier. This allows time to explore the immediate surroundings, grab any necessary cash for on-site purchases, and settle into the pre-show buzz. The energy of Shinjuku itself is part of the experience, and the Samurai Restaurant is a prime example of the district's unique brand of entertainment. TikTok
