Reviews Summary
Shimabara Port is praised for its efficient ferry operations, offering a comfortable and time-saving journey, particularly to Kumamoto. Passengers appreciate the scenic views and onboard amenities. Some minor inconveniences include potential cash-only requirements for combined tickets and the need to check weather for cancellations.
"How it works is that you drive your car to the post and the staff will give you a card detailing your car dimensions. He then directs you to queue your car into row 1-10. You park, and head into the terminal building to purchase your ferry ticket for your car (using the detail card) and any other passengers. Then, about 10min before departure time, standby in your car and they will guide you up accordingly. Once at destination, they will guide you off the ship and you can just continue your journey.
The hour long journey from shimabara to kumamoto offered plenty of majestic views. The ride was comfortable and enjoyable, with sufficient amenities and seating. They were even broadcasting a J league cup game live!
The scheduled adhered to expected Japanese punctuality, though weather conditions may cause rides to be cancelled, so be sure to check the website for updates."

As of March 2025, the combined ferry plus bus ticket to Kumamoto costs around ¥1,900 and can only be paid in cash. However, if purchasing just the ferry ticket, you can pay with either cash or a credit card.
The boat itself is comfortable, with enough seating and a relaxing atmosphere. The journey is short and pleasant, making it a convenient way to travel between Shimabara and Kumamoto."

"Mid January 2025: Drove up 10' before departure and was able to run in and buy tickets for my vehicle and passengers. Very efficient service and slightly more affordable than the other ferry company. If you have time before your ferry, I recommend visiting the buried houses due to the volcano eruption, nearby."
