What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Rinno-ji Temple is highly praised for its stunning, well-maintained Zen garden, offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere that rivals more famous sites. Visitors appreciate its affordability, accessibility, and year-round beauty, making it a must-visit in Sendai. Some minor drawbacks include potential mosquito presence in damp conditions and the pagoda being closed on certain days.
"Rinnoji Temple has about 500 years of history, with rebuilt few times, and visitors will be impressed with its Zen-style garden and pagoda [Pagoda was closed to the public, except 1st and 15th of each month]. Because its garden is planted with different trees and flowers, surrounded by a Japanese pond, thus, visitors can enjoy visit at all seasons.
Visitors to the Temple probably can immediately feel the peacefulness and coolness once they enter the main gate of the Temple when they are walking the worship avenue which is surrounded by tall trees, shaded tree branches and leaves, and, above all, 13 sitting bodhisattva and buddha statues which shows important Buddhism beliefs and traditions, such as merciness, enlightenment, caring, karma, etc. After passing the entrance gate, also, there is a stone inscription stating- NO Meat or Liquor allowed passing the main gate, and it really enhances the Buddhist tradition for vegetarian and NO liquor or wine for the Buddhists or Buddhist believers.
Rinnoji Temple is famous for its beautiful garden, which is traditional Japanese garden. Although there are a few standing bodhisattva and buddha statues inside garden, visitors probably will not feel much religious flavor or any doctrination propaganda purpose.
The entrance fee for the Temple’s garden is $300 Yen, and there are bathrooms inside garden for the visitors. The Temple does have free Saturday-night Zen-sitting session open the public.
In light raining days, visitors should be alerted for mosquitoes when walking through courtyard avenue or worship avenue."

"Highly recommend visiting if you are in the Sendai area. It’s a beautiful garden with a nice pagoda. It’s a little travel from the Sendai station but easily accessible from the metro. Entry is only 300 yen, and there are not so many people (visited on a sunday around 11 AM)."

The History and Significance of Rinno-ji Temple
The temple's philosophy emphasizes living in harmony with nature, as quoted by the 44th Abbott, Doryu Hioki: 'Zen is actually about following the rules of nature. If we continue to work against nature, nature will [take] revenge [on] humans.' This perspective is beautifully embodied in the temple's meticulously designed Zen garden, which aims to reflect natural principles. Visitors often feel a sense of peace and coolness upon entering the main gate, a testament to the temple's serene environment and its connection to natural elements.

While there are some statues within the garden, the focus remains on the natural beauty and the meditative atmosphere. The modest ¥300 entrance fee makes this stunning natural sanctuary accessible to all, offering exceptional value for the tranquility and visual delight it provides.
