This small island with a population of about 800 people has a history of being settled by hidden Christians, and the entire island is registered as a World Heritage Site as the Kuroshima Village, a World Heritage Site related to hidden Christians in Nagasaki and the Amakusa Region. The name Kuroshima has appeared in records since the Kamakura period, and there was a time when it was a base for pirates. In the Edo period, the Hirado Domain, which ruled the island, recruited immigrants to the island to cultivate it. At that time, many hidden Christians from the Omura Domain migrated to the island and continued their faith in secret. Even today, 80% of the island's residents are Catholic. Since the Meiji period, due to its proximity to Sasebo Naval Base, naval facilities have been built, and ruins remain in various places on the island.

"Kuroshima is reached by ferry from Ainoura via Takashima. The journey takes 50 minutes. After arriving at Kuroshima, I walked around the island. First, I went to Kuroshima Cathedral, but it was under renovation. There was an exhibition room next door, so I looked at the tools used in the church. After walking for a while, I saw camellias planted for wind protection. I was told they were 2,300 years old. Nearby was a ko tree that resembled an octopus's leg. Kuroshima Shrine is located near the port. I wasn't able to see everything, but I walked about 17,000 steps. If I have the opportunity again, I would like to see the rest of the famous sights.
