Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Sapporo Underground Pedestrian Space for its incredible convenience, especially during harsh weather, and its extensive network connecting key areas. It's a vibrant hub for shopping and dining, offering a comfortable escape from the elements. However, some caution is advised due to occasional crowding and the risk of pickpocketing during performances.

"As a first time foreign tourist in Sapporo, I did a walk through this famous underground complex today that goes by the name of "Sapporo Ekimaedori Underground Walkway." This "Walkway" was a never-ending below ground passageway with many side passageways, which not linked the subway stations of downtown Sapporo, but also the major commercial buildings above ground or road level at their respective basement levels. And besides that, there were many retail and food and beverage shops along these passageways and even the occasional sections of flea market. So, there's a lot to see and do and eat here, and it offers a comfortable ambience from the open air situation above - especially, if it's during warm summers or cold winters."

"This underground walkway is very useful during winter.

When we first arrived at sapporo, we needed to walk on icy road from sapporo Station to our hotel at tanukikoji 狸小路. Google Map showed it takes 20 minutes' walk, but eventually, we took 40 minutes as it was very difficult to navigate on ice and snow road.

After a few days at sapporo, we finally discovered this underground walkway. It only took us 20 minutes from sapporo Station to tanukikoji vice versa (the entrance of this underground walkway is at the junction between tanukikoji 3 and 4). On top of that, it actually link sapporo Station to susukono and passby tanukikoji, TV tower, and Clock Tower. In short, tanukikoji is horizontal, and this underground walkway is vertical from sapporo Station.

This underground walkway connects to pole town underground shopping street between clock tower and susukino."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Sapporo's Underground City

The Sapporo Underground Pedestrian Space, often referred to as Chi-Ka-Ho, is an extensive network of interconnected passages that forms a subterranean city beneath Sapporo. It seamlessly links the city's major subway stations: Sapporo Station, Odori Station, and Susukino Station. Beyond just transit, it's a vibrant commercial hub, housing numerous shops, restaurants, cafes, and even performance stages. This underground labyrinth is particularly invaluable during Sapporo's extreme weather conditions, offering a comfortable and dry passage during frigid winters and sweltering summers. Reddit

For first-time visitors, navigating this complex can seem daunting. However, tools like Google Maps can be incredibly helpful. By zooming in, you can often see areas shaded in red, indicating the underground network. Look for exit numbers displayed in black on yellow signs to orient yourself. Information stands are also available, especially around Odori Park, where friendly staff can provide maps and assistance. Reddit

The underground is divided into several key areas, including Pole Town and Aurora Town, which connect Odori and Susukino, and APIA, linked to Sapporo Station. These areas are packed with retail outlets, from fashion and souvenirs to daily necessities. The convenience of accessing these amenities without braving the elements above ground makes Chi-Ka-Ho a crucial part of the Sapporo experience for both locals and tourists. Reddit

A Haven from Sapporo's Weather

Sapporo is renowned for its challenging climate, with intensely cold winters and humid summers. The Underground Pedestrian Space (Chi-Ka-Ho) serves as a vital refuge, allowing residents and visitors to move between key city points without enduring the harsh elements. During winter, it's a welcome escape from sub-zero temperatures and icy sidewalks, making travel between Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino significantly more comfortable and safer. Reddit

Conversely, during the summer months, the underground provides a cool respite from the heat and humidity. This makes it an ideal place to explore shops and dine without feeling overheated. The consistent, comfortable temperature year-round is a major draw, transforming a potentially uncomfortable journey into a pleasant experience. Reddit

While the underground offers a fantastic escape, it's important to note that its popularity means it can become quite crowded, especially during peak hours or when special events are taking place. Some visitors have reported instances of pickpocketing during crowded performances, so it's always wise to remain aware of your surroundings and secure your belongings. Reddit
