"Samukawa Jinja Shrine has become a yearly pilgrimage for me, even though I’ve since moved quite far away. I went the first time in 2017 for the first shrine visit of the New Year (hatsumode), and have gone at least once a year since then. I urge you to not just visit it like a normal shrine - go to the shrine reception to the right before you walk into the large plaza, and request a Happo-Yoke blessing. You will need to “donate” at least 3,000 yen. You’ll (or a friend) will need to know how to speak and write Japanese for this process. At the end of the Shinto blessing ritual, you’ll be given a wooden slate to ward off bad spirits from all directions. Place it somewhere in your home above your head."

"Went there on New Year’s Eve 2023 after 1:00am. Heavy traffic. Parking space felt it was organized by Yakuza - very expensive. Buttakuri!
Food kiosks felt were syndicated! Though the experience is unique. It was super cold, and many people had come to do their New Year wishes and prayers,
I give 3 stars because of the way parking and food kiosks were organized. Through the shrine is old, the gate is illuminated with neon lights, and that did not make it feel old!"
