Reviews Summary

Visitors find Yonago Kitaro Airport charmingly unique due to its 'GeGeGe no Kitaro' theme, making it a fun and photogenic experience. However, its small size means limited dining and shopping options, especially after security, and transportation can involve significant wait times.

"The airport is really small, which has pros and cons.

Pros: Very straightforward, after check-in they tell you at what time the security checks start and if you are early you can check some of the few souvenir stores and restaurants on the second floor or the 7/11 on the first floor.

Cons: Security checks and immigration staff is limited so you might wait a while. Also since the airport is small there is limited transportation options to the center. There is a bus and a train, but when I arrived in had to wait almost 1 hour for the next train and for the return flight I had no choice but to arrive two hours prior to departure as the next bus would have been hours later."

"There is nothing to eat in the duty-free area after security check. The best place to eat is at the 7-Eleven on the first floor.

Security checks are done on time for each flight, so you don't have to wait long."

Platinum Guide

"Small but convenient airport. Just 15min driving from Sakaiminato. Remember to buy the souvenirs before you enter the customs, there were only one gift shop after entered the customs while those gift are not related to Yonago. There is also no restaurants after entered the customs, so please remember to complete everything before enter the customs.

The airport is very small that you can go from airline counter to security check in 2 minutes walk, and only 30 sec walks from the customs to the waiting hall for departure."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The 'GeGeGe no Kitaro' Phenomenon

Yonago Kitaro Airport is a tribute to the beloved manga series 'GeGeGe no Kitaro' by Shigeru Mizuki, who hailed from Sakaiminato City. The airport's entire design embraces this theme, transforming a functional travel hub into an immersive experience. From the moment you arrive, you'll be greeted by yokai (supernatural beings) characters like Kitaro, Nezumi Otoko, and Sunakake Babaa, integrated into statues, artwork, and even signage. Instagram+2

This unique theming makes the airport a destination in itself, especially for fans of the manga and anime. It's a place where the line between travel and entertainment blurs, offering a whimsical introduction to the local culture and folklore. The attention to detail in the decorations ensures that every corner holds a delightful surprise, making it a memorable stop for visitors of all ages. Instagram+1

Beyond the visual appeal, the airport also offers a taste of local flavor. You can find restaurants and shops that incorporate the yokai theme or feature local Tottori produce. This integration of culture, art, and commerce creates a truly distinctive airport experience that sets it apart from typical travel terminals. Instagram+1

Navigating a Small Airport

Yonago Kitaro Airport is characterized by its small size, which offers both advantages and disadvantages for travelers. On the plus side, navigating the terminal is incredibly straightforward. You can walk from the airline counter to security in just a couple of minutes, and from customs to the departure waiting hall in about 30 seconds. This efficiency means less time spent rushing and more time to enjoy the unique atmosphere. Reddit

However, the compact nature also means limited amenities. Dining options are scarce, with the 7-Eleven on the first floor being a reliable spot for quick snacks and drinks. Crucially, there are very few, if any, restaurants or significant shops after you pass through security. Therefore, it's essential to complete all your souvenir shopping and dining before proceeding to the departure gates. InstagramReddit

Transportation to and from the airport also requires careful planning due to its size and location. While buses and trains are available, they don't run with high frequency. Travelers have reported waiting up to an hour for the next train or bus. This necessitates arriving at the airport well in advance of your flight, especially for departures, to avoid missing connections or facing long waits. Reddit
